The Abyssinian gladiolus ( Gladiolus murielae ) also star gladiolus called, is a species of the genus of gladiolus ( Gladiolus ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

features

The Abyssinian gladiolus is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 110 centimeters. As a survival organ, this geophyte forms tubers that are up to 2.5 centimeters wide. The leaves are up to 2.5 inches wide. The 1 to 6, sometimes up to 10 flowers are fragrant. The perigone is (6) 7 to 10 centimeters long, curved and very slender. The perigone are 2 to 3 centimeters long, roughly the same, spread out in a star shape and colored white. With the exception of the uppermost, all have a black-red, rhombic spot in their throat.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

Occurrence

The Abyssinian gladiolus occurs in East Africa from Ethiopia and Eritrea to Malawi and Mozambique on weakly shaded rocky locations.

Gladiolus murielae Kelway has the synonyms: Gladiolus callianthus Marais , Acidanthera bicolor Hochst. A variety of the Abyssinian gladiolus is Gladiolus callianthus var. Murielae Perry . The plants are usually taller, the stem is rough and the perigone spots are chestnut red.

use

The Abyssinian gladiolus is widely used as an ornamental plant for borders in groups and summer borders and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1895 at the latest. The variety murielae is mostly cultivated .
