Abington in Plymouth County in the US state of Massachusetts is a city with 15,985 inhabitants (2010).
geography
Abington is 19 miles southeast of Boston and 6 miles east of Brockton . To the west of the city is Ames Nowell State Park .
history
The urban area was bought in 1649 Massasoit , the chief of the Wampanoag . It was known by the Indians under the name Manamooskeagin , which means something like "great green place of the trembling grass". The first European settlers came in 1668, and in 1712 it was founded with the name Abington after the city of the same name in England . In 1769 an iron foundry was built. Around 1815, Jesse Reed invented a machine for making shoe nails , which gave the shoe industry a boost. During the American Civil War , half of all boots worn by the Union Army were made in Abington. From 1846 to 1865 Abington was a center of the anti-slavery movement .
From 1894 to 1895, Henry H. Buffum built the Buffum Four Cylinder Stanhope in Abington , the first four-cylinder automobile in the world. In 1901 he founded the HH Buffum Company , which produced automobiles until 1907.
