Johann Abraham Bleibtreu (born May 24, 1775 in Neuwied ; † April 1, 1852 in Erpel ) was a German mining entrepreneur and miner who, together with his brother Leopold Bleibtreu, significantly shaped mining in the Rhineland at the beginning of the 19th century .

Abraham Bleibtreu was the son of Carl Philipp Bleibtreu (1746–1812) and Sara born. Bolckhaus, daughter of the Cologne merchant Jacob Bolckhaus. His younger brother was the mining entrepreneur and miner Leopold Bleibtreu (1777-1839). His nephew Hermann Bleibtreu (1821–1881) was the inventor of German Portland cement .

Abraham Bleibtreu was married to Catharina Hönerscheid (1793–1857) and had six children.

Life

Abraham Bleibtreu grew up in Neuwied. He attended the Latin school in Neuwied with his younger brother Leopold and later had private lessons. He received commercial training in his father's company and from his cousin Ludwig Bleibtreu in Rotterdam. In 1803 he succeeded his brother Leopold as a mining inspector and took over the management of the family-owned ore mines St. Josephsberg (also known as the Virneberg mine ) in Rheinbreitbach and St. Marienberg in neighboring Bruchhausen . Some of the trade unions of the Bleibtreu brothers a. the brothers Johann Christian (1757–1829) and Engelbert Anton Rhodius (1751–1822) from Cologne-Mülheim participated. Two sons of Johann Christian Rhodius, Christian (1798–1865) and Engelbert Rhodius (1804–1883), ran a few pits later on their own. These two brothers were also co-founders of the white lead factory in Burgbrohl in 1827 , a predecessor of the Rhodius Brothers GmbH & Co. KG .

In 1806 and 1809 the brothers Leopold and Abraham Bleibtreu built two alum factories in what is now the Holzlar district of Bonn . They developed these into the largest alum smelting company in Prussia by the 1830s. In 1825 Abraham Bleibtreu was appointed Princely Wiedisches and in 1830 Royal Prussian Mountain Master. For the Fürstlich-Wiedische Bergamt he issued the mining police penal order of June 7, 1837 and the regulations on keeping the mining books .

In 1811 Abraham Bleibtreu took over the former Carmelite monastery in Erpel, which his brother Leopold Bleibtreu had acquired in 1804. He lived there until his death on April 1, 1852. His grave is in the Evangelical Cemetery in Holzlar .
