Abraham Storck ( April 1644 in Amsterdam ; † April 1708 ibid) was a Dutch marine painter in the 17th century. His works relating to Tsar Peter I and his visit to Amsterdam are particularly important.

Life

His exact dates of birth and death are not known. Only his baptism on April 17, 1644 in the Amsterdam Noorderkerk and his burial on April 8, 1708 in the Sint Anthoniskerkhof in Amsterdam are documented.

His parents were Jan Jansen Sturck from Wesel , fine painter, and Teuntje Jacobs from Amsterdam. Father Jan called himself both Sturck and Sturckenburch in the documents. In addition to Abraham, they had two other sons: Johannes, baptized 1629 and Jacob, baptized 1641. Little is known about the latter. But he must have died in 1688. The eldest son married Eytje Bronckhorst in 1668 and thus became brother-in-law of the marine painter Jan Abrahamszoon Beerstaten . That was not the only reason why the ties between the Storck and Beerstaten families were close.

Abraham, also called Sturckenburgh in documents, still lived in his parents' house in 1663. In 1688 he was named a member of the St. Lucas guild . On November 14, 1694, he married Neeltje Pieters van Meyservelt, who was already bringing in children from a previous marriage. Travel to Italy cannot be proven.

From the immense number of works left behind, one can find the main themes of Italian and southern vedute , sea battles, whaling and Peter the Great in Holland . It is difficult to tell the works of the brothers apart. It is therefore thought that the most gifted, Abraham, ran the workshop and signed the works for sale.

For the depictions of his Italian ports and buildings, models can be found in contemporary prints . A connection to Beerstaten, who also painted “Italian” vedutas, can be established with this theme. In addition to Italianizing views, the port views and shipping scenes are generally assigned to the south or the Mediterranean. It is noticeable that in addition to regional ship types, large Dutch ships often determine the content and composition of the picture. This way of working of the picture composition can also be found in Dutch views.

The depiction of the four-day battle is the best-known work for his oeuvre as well as for this event. In terms of the number of works, however, it is the smallest subject in his work. In addition to the four-day battle with several works, only a few of the sea battles off Texel 1673 and La Hougue 1693 are known.

At the end of the 17th century, whaling became a major business across Europe. This topic is increasingly being taken up by various artists. Works by Storck are also known. Some unsigned works could have been created in the Storck workshop . There is also a connection to the marine painter Hendrik Jacobsz. Dubbels .

When Tsar Peters visited the Netherlands, he helped build a ship at the shipyard of the East India Company in Amsterdam. This ship, named in his honor Pieter en Paul , is shown in several paintings from all sides. At the same time, it is the ship's only pictorial source. During the tsar's stay in Amsterdam there was also a mock battle between small yachts and inland vessels and this was again recorded in several paintings.
