The Abtei-Gymnasium Brauweiler is a high school in Brauweiler ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was founded in 1973 as an offshoot of the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Pulheim, after the former community of Brauweiler had tried to establish its own high school in 1965. Due to the high number of registrations for the 1974/75 school year, the branch of the Pulheimer Gymnasium became an independent gymnasium on June 28, 1974 in the building of the newly built Brauweiler school center. It is mainly visited by schoolchildren from Brauweiler and the neighboring villages of Dansweiler , Sinthern , Geyen , Frechen-Königsdorf , Bergheim-Glessen , Cologne-Widdersdorf and Cologne-Lövenich . Since November 2010 it has been allowed to be called the European School . A bilingual branch with English has been offered since the 2012/13 school year . In addition, the students can choose between French and Latin as a second foreign language. Spanish is also offered in the upper level and as a differentiation area.

profile

The Abtei-Gymnasium places particular emphasis on promoting cultural awareness and action. The school's flagship is the KulTour profile: since the 2003/04 school year, around half of the pupils have been taught in KulTour classes. Up to six hours of lessons per week are project- and product-oriented in cooperation between teachers and external staff from the performing arts, theater education, photography, etc. The individual grades have different focuses: Grade 5: Movement theater Grade 6: Speech theater Grade 7: Writing workshop Grade 8: Multi-cultural Grade 9: Design In the upper level there is the possibility of taking corresponding courses in the KulTour profile: Grade EF: Photography Grade Q1: short film fictional Grade Q2: documentary film In addition, activities in the musical field (rock and pop bands, big bands, orchestras, choirs, etc.) are part of the school's cultural profile. In grades 5 and 6, wind courses are offered for children who do not attend the KulTour classes in cooperation with the La Musica music school, in which the children learn a wind instrument and their music lessons are given more practical.

Since 2003, shorter modules in English have been offered in the individual subjects to learn the technical terminology. At the moment, all students can choose a bilingual module from grade 7 onwards; preparatory courses are offered for this purpose in the first two grades 5 and 6. From the 7th grade onwards, specialist lessons in geography or politics are given bilingually.

The Europaschule profile is maintained in the wide range of languages and in the KulTour classes explicitly in the 8th year under the topic of multi-cultural . In addition to English, Latin, French and Spanish, Italian can be learned in working groups. An internship exchange with Verona has existed for many years, for many years the school has been involved in Erasmus and currently in Comenius projects in connection with many other European countries, so that the students have diverse opportunities to meet. The Abtei-Gymnasium is also certified as the School of the Future - Education for Sustainability , this is expressed above all in the differentiation area between levels 8 and 9 and various working groups, but also has very practical effects on everyday school life.

There are also events with external guests such as authors, theater ensembles or musicians (the Cologne band Brings , among others, played as part of a cultural year ). Events with external partners are also held.

An extensive fire protection renovation of the school center was carried out from 1999 to 2007. The large cafeteria was built between 2010 and 2011. Performances take place in the forum of the school center in which a gallery can be included in the action. Recently, performances can also take place in the cafeteria on the “scene area”.
