Acanthoprasium frutescens is a plant of the genus Acanthoprasium within the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae). It is endemic to the Maritime Alps .

description

Acanthoprasium frutescens is a small, branched shrub that reaches heights of up to 60 cm. Its branches are square to almost round in cross-section. The opposite leaves are short stalked. The leaf blade is ovate to rhombic with one to four coarse teeth on each side. The lower leaves consist of a 5 to 6 mm long petiole and a 15 to 25 mm long and 10 to 20 mm wide leaf blade.

The flowers stand in pairs to six in a whorl or at the tip of the branches. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . At each node (four wound dry located) cover sheets (Brakteolen) are straightened and formed into spikes; they are white, glabrous and 7 to 10 mm long. The calyx is 12 to 15 mm long, bell-shaped, slightly enlarged at the throat and has 5 to 10 wide triangular aurled teeth. The corolla tube does not rise above the chalice. The five white or purple petals are fused to form a 12 to 15 mm long tube. The crown ends with two lips. Her upper lip is capped with long white hair.

The flowering period is between May and July.

Occurrence

Acanthoprasium frutescens is endemic to the Maritime Alps of France and Italy. It thrives on rocks.

Taxonomy

A synonym of Acanthoprasium frutescens (L.) Spenn. is Ballota frutescens (L.) Woods . Even George Bentham had in 1834 this type in its own section: Ballota sect. Acanthoprasium placed within the genus Ballota . But as early as 1843, the Baden botanist Fridolin Karl Leopold Spenner was of the opinion that this species belonged to a genus of its own called Acanthoprasium . That has recently been confirmed.
