Acanthoprasium integrifolium is a plant of the genus Acanthoprasium within the family Labiatae (Lamiaceae). It is endemic to Cyprus .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Acanthoprasium integrifolium is a small shrub and reaches heights of no more than 1 meter. Its branches are bluntly square when young. The hair ( indument ) is quite different, but it only consists of simple hair.

The opposite leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is up to 15 millimeters long. The simple leaf blade is 7 to 30 millimeters long and 5 to 25 millimeters wide and ovate or oblong with entire or rarely lobed margins.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to June. The mostly branched inflorescence consists of cymes , each containing only one flower. The bracts are conspicuous, they are bare, brown, 7 to 15 millimeters long and transformed into straight or curved thorns.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The calyx is funnel-shaped or bell-shaped and 11 to 15 millimeters long and about 7 to 9 millimeters wide; he has five teeth of almost the same length. The corolla is clearly two-lipped, it is white or lavender or white with red stripes, its corolla tube has a hair ring inside. The upper lip is helmet-like and hairy on the outside. The lower lip is three-lobed, the middle lobe is edged, 3 to 5 millimeters long and 6 to 7 millimeters wide. The 12 millimeter long stylus has stylus branches that are almost the same length.

The dark brown nuts are rounded at the top, 3.5 millimeters long and 2.5 millimeters wide.

Occurrence

This endemic occurs only in Cyprus . Acanthoprasium integrifolium thrives on limestone or sandstone rocks, on stony slopes, even on walls. One finds Acanthoprasium integrifolium at altitudes from sea level up to about 750 meters.

Taxonomy

The first publication took place under the name ( Basionym ) Ballota integrifolia by George Bentham . The new combination to Acanthoprasium integrifolium (Benth.) Ryding was carried out by the Danish botanist Per Olof Ryding in 2011. Another synonym for Acanthoprasium integrifolium (Benth.) Ryding is Ballota wettsteinii Rech. Since 2011, it has been part of the genus Acanthoprasium with a second species, Acanthoprasium frutescens . But John Isaac Briquet had already recognized the close relationship between the two species as early as 1893.
