The Acheneau is a river in France that runs in the Loire-Atlantique department , in the Pays de la Loire region . It has its origin in the lake Lac de Grand Lieu , the drain of which it forms. This wetland is a natural landscape worth preserving and registered under Natura 2000 under code FR5200625. The Acheneau generally drains in a north-westerly direction through the Pays de Retz landscape and flows into the Loire as a left tributary after 29 kilometers in the municipality of Le Pellerin . The river originally ran further west and passed the city of Vue . With the construction of the Canal de Buzay , which today forms the estuary, the course of the river was shortened and opened for shipping. But this has already been discontinued today. Immediately before its mouth, the Canal de Buzay crosses the Canal maritime de la Basse Loire (also called Canal de la Martinière ).
