Achille Manara

Achille Cardinal Manara (born November 20, 1827 in Bologna , † February 15, 1906 in Ancona ) was Archbishop of Ancona e Numana .

Life

Achille Manara studied theology at the University of Bologna and received his doctorate in July 1851. On May 25, 1850 he was ordained a priest . From 1853 he was chaplain at the city's Great Hospital, later he worked as a judge for church affairs. Manara was also awarded the title of Papal Honorary Chaplain.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on May 12, 1879 Bishop of Ancona e Numana. He was ordained bishop on May 22nd of the same year by Cardinal Vicar Raffaele Monaco La Valletta . Co-consecrators were Giulio Lenti , auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Rome , and Placido Maria Schiaffino , president of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . On November 29, 1895 Leo XIII took him. as cardinal priest of San Pancrazio in the college of cardinals . Until Edoardo Menichelli's cardinal creation in 2015, he was the last (arch) bishop of Ancona to become cardinal. After the death of Leo XIII. he took part in the conclave in 1903 .

Pope Pius X elevated the diocese of Ancona to an archbishopric on September 14, 1904 , making Cardinal Manara the first archbishop of Ancona e Numana. He died in February 1906 and was buried in the city cemetery of Ancona.
