Adalbert von Springer (born September 28, 1896 in Rzeszów , Poland , † September 17, 1943 in Halle (Saale) ) was an Austrian medic and resistance fighter .

Life

Adalbert von Springer's father, Anton von Springer, served as major general in the Austro-Hungarian Joint Army . Springer grew up in Vienna , where he graduated from the Schottengymnasium . In 1914 he began studying medicine at the University of Vienna , which he had to interrupt during the First World War . Initially he was a one-year volunteer in the imperial army , but was eventually a soldier until the end of the war.

After the war he finished his medical studies and received his doctorate in 1921. He then worked as a general practitioner first in the hospital and later in a sanatorium in Baden near Vienna. In 1935 he was also trained as a doctor of gynecology .

Springer was a member of the Social Democratic Workers 'Party (SDAP) from 1925 and paid contributions to the Red Aid , but in this early phase he was also sympathetic to the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). Around 1933 he joined Adolf Hitler's party , but left again in 1936 for professional reasons. However, documents show that after the " Anschluss of Austria " to the German Reich in 1938 he again paid membership fees to the NSDAP. However, there is no evidence that he rejoined the NSDAP. Springer became a reserve soldier in the Wehrmacht in 1939 . In 1940 he was promoted to senior physician and only a year later to medical officer.

Nevertheless, Springer soon offered resistance against National Socialism . With his pay he supported the underground Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) as well as opposition doctors and intellectuals. In his apartment in the Viennese district of Mariahilf there were frequent conspiratorial meetings. From autumn 1941 he was co-author of several leaflets that he sent to officers and soldiers of the Wehrmacht. In these he condemned the war:

"The war will end when the anger is greater than the fear."
