He came from the Saxon noble family von Schönberg and was the son of Adam Friedrich von Schönberg (1654–1707) and his wife Augusta Maria Marschall .

In December 1748 he acquired the Mannlehn manor Schleinitz near Meineweh in the Pforta office, which was for sale twice in quick succession through the debt of the previous owner Wilhelm Romanus Loth . He also owned the Börnichen estates near Oederan in the Saxon Ore Mountains and Meineweh. Due to his early death, his property fell to his children, who initially administered it together, but were divided up in 1754.

He was married to Wilhelmina Ernestina von Einsiedel , with whom he had seven children, including three sons who survived him and became his heirs. These included Carl August von Schönberg (1725–1805), who was chamberlain to the Elector of Saxony , chief tax collector and, most recently, chief tax director and commissioner of the cash-billets commission.
