Gustav Adolf Rieth (born September 14, 1902 in Reutlingen , † November 14, 1984 in Tübingen ) was a German prehistorian . He worked as a state curator and head of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Tübingen.

Life

Adolf Rieth studied natural sciences at the University of Tübingen , graduating with a doctorate in 1926 with a major in geography and a minor in prehistory . From 1941 to 1943 he worked as a curator at the State Plenipotentiary for Prehistory and Protohistory in Alsace in Strasbourg , where he completed his habilitation in 1944 . Between 1945 and 1953 he was head of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Württemberg-Hohenzollern and from 1953 to 1967 he was the head of the newly formed State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Tübingen in the archaeological preservation of monuments . Another focus of his work there was the creation and design of cemeteries and memorials for concentration camp victims.

From 1952 to 1970 Rieth was also a lecturer for prehistory at the University of Tübingen .

Apart from its importance for the state archeology , Rieth is known through various publications on prehistoric technology and as an art collector . Parts of the "Rieth Collection" were transferred to the Graphic Collection of the University of Tübingen in 1987 and 1990/91 .

family

Adolf Rieth was married to the SPD local politician and art collector Hedwig Rieth (née Schradin, 1910–2006); his mother-in-law was the Württemberg state parliament member and women's rights activist Laura Schradin .
