Adolf Siemens

Wilhelm Adolf Siemens (born March 4, 1811 in Pyrmont , † June 30, 1887 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and artilleryman from the Siemens family .

Life

Siemens began his military career on May 1, 1829, when he joined the Hanover artillery brigade as a cadet . There he was on 13 November 1832 to second lieutenant and December 28, 1839 First Lieutenant promoted. In 1847 Siemens improved the Bormann can or ring detonator for shrapnel and also the projectile itself, which was accepted in the new form by the German Confederation . In 1849 he took part in the campaign against Denmark and in 1866 in the war against Prussia .

After the dissolution of the Hanoverian Army , Siemens entered the Prussian service as a lieutenant colonel on March 19, 1867 , was assigned to the artillery examination commission , of which he was later chairman, and in 1868 worked to keep Krupp 's artillery in the German navy . Siemens received the Order of the Red Eagle IV. Class in January 1869 and was put up for disposition as major general in 1872 .

He has lived in Stuttgart since then , but later joined the Werner Siemenssche Institut, invented an electric range finder, a system for firing guns by electric means, a method for measuring the speed of the projectile in the gun barrel, and more. He died in Berlin and was buried in the local cemetery in the Hasenheide on July 4, 1887.
