Adolph Wernher

Wernher, Carl Gustav Adolph (born March 20, 1809 in Mainz ; † July 14, 1883 there ), was a German surgeon , pathologist and university professor .

Life

origin

Adolph Wernher was born as the son of the Privy Councilor of State and Court President Johann Wilhelm Wernher and his wife Julie Friederike Charlotte, nee. Break, born. In 1835 his first marriage in Offenbach was Caroline Fleischmann, who died the following year while giving birth to her first son, Carl Wernher. His second marriage was on July 17, 1837 in Gießen Marie Katharine Magdalene Barbara Josephine Christiane, b. Baroness von Riefel. The daughter Julie Valentine Henriette Franziska Wernher comes from this marriage.

Career

After attending grammar school in Mainz and from 1817 in Darmstadt , Wernher studied medicine from 1825 at the universities of Gießen, Heidelberg , Berlin and Halle . Back in Giessen, he passed the medical exams and was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. He then worked for a short time as a cholera doctor in Nieder-Olm .

Well-off at home, he then went on a training trip to visit the most famous surgeons and clinics of his time in Paris and London . In 1834 Wernher established himself as a general practitioner in Offenbach. There he also held the position of physics surgeon .

In 1835 he was appointed associate professor and assistant to Professor Ferdinand von Ritgen at the surgical clinic in Giessen, where he began his academic career. Just two years later he was appointed full professor and director of the surgical clinic. In addition, he was given the chair of pathological anatomy in 1845 and the management of the academic hospital in 1851. In 1849 and 1874 he was rector of the university.

Wernher was an outstanding physician with great knowledge. He concentrated his practical work more on pathology than on surgery. A specialization that was certainly also attributable to a serious eye disease that he contracted through an infection in 1858 and that severely restricted his operations. His numerous publications on a wide variety of topics, however, testify to a considerably more extensive range of activities. His main work is the four-volume handbook of general and special surgery, the first edition of which appeared between 1846 and 1857. As a lecturer , he was able to captivate his students with his knowledge and precise diagnoses. Through his lively lecture he succeeded in getting her excited about the theory.

Wernher retired on May 1, 1878. In retirement, he moved to his native Mainz, where he pursued further scientific studies.
