The Adrian Darya 1 (formerly Grace 1 ) is a mineral oil tanker built in 1997 from the group of Very Large Crude Carriers .

history

The ship was under the hull number on the 947 yard of Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan , South Korea , built. The keel was laid on July 27, 1996, the launch on February 28, 1997. The ship was completed on March 31, 1997. After its completion, the double-hull tanker was sold as the Meridian Lion for the Second Union Tanker Corporation under the flag of the Marshall Islands in Set sail, managed by OSG Ship Management from November 1998 and transferred in 1999 to Meridian Tanker Corporation, a subsidiary of the US Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG). In April 2003, the Overseas Shipholding Group acquired complete ownership of the tankers Meridian Lion and Equatorial Lion, which had previously been held 50% in a joint venture with a large oil company . In June 2003 OSG sold both ships for 60.5 million US dollars each to Salamon AG in Dortmund and chartered the Meridian Lion back over eight years for a daily charter rate of 26,930 US dollars. In 2003 the ship was registered with SAG Unternehmensbeteiligungsgesellschaft MT "Meridian Lion" mbH & Co Tankschiff KG , with Columbia Shipmanagement taking over the management . In 2006 the tanker was renamed Overseas Meridian .

On the morning of December 20, 2007, the Overseas Meridian collided with the Suezmax tanker Isi Olive in the southern entrance to the Suez Canal . Both ships ran aground, whereupon traffic on the canal had to be stopped for six hours.

In 2013 the ship was brought under the Panamanian flag as Grace 1 . The flag state revoked the ship's right to fly the Panamanian flag on May 29, 2019, as there were indications that the ship could be linked to terrorist activities. In March 2019, Reuters had already compared the cargo documents received with the movements of the ship. Although the papers showed that the ship was loaded in Iraq in December 2018, Reuters was unable to find any evidence of the ship's presence in Basra ; instead, the ship's AIS tracking was deactivated between November 30 and December 14, 2018. The next secured recording of the Grace 1 took place near the Iranian port of Bandar Assaluyeh in a fully loaded condition.

The ship is owned by Grace Tankers Ltd , based in Singapore . It was renamed and brought under the flag of Iran in August 2019. The new name of the ship was Adrian Darya 1 . It is operated by the Panama-based company Ocean Mark Shipping.

On July 4, 2019, a commando unit of 30 soldiers from the British Royal Marines boarded the ship in cooperation with units of the police and customs from Gibraltar . On the British side, the crew was suspected of supplying the Syrian refinery Banias Refinery Company , which was subject to an EU embargo, with the ship apparently fully loaded with Iranian oil, which was prohibited by Gibraltar the day before due to a change in the legal situation. In addition, a corresponding request from the USA should have been submitted. The ship was confiscated. The captain and first officer, both Indian citizens, were arrested. The Prime Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo , informed the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council about the action, which, according to Gibraltar, serves to protect an EU embargo that has banned Syria from exporting oil since 2011. However, crude oil deliveries to Syria are not subject to the embargo.

28 crew members from India , Pakistan and Ukraine were on board . At the usual world market prices in July 2019 in the range of around 60 to 65 US dollars per barrel of OPEC crude oil, the cargo was worth over 120 million US dollars.

On August 15, 2019, it was announced that the ship would be released after Iran assured that the cargo on board the ship would not be destined for Syria. The US tried to intervene to prevent the release. A US federal court in Washington even ordered the ship to be confiscated. This was rejected by the authorities in Gibraltar with reference to EU law.

On August 18, 2019 at 11.49 p.m. local time, the ship, led by a new crew, began slow voyage towards Greece, which, however, refused to support the tanker. On August 26th, IRIB announced that the cargo had been sold to an undisclosed buyer. The ship was located south of Greece at the time.

On September 4, 2019, the US State Department confirmed that the captain of the Adrian Darya 1 had been offered several million dollars. In return, he should steer the tanker into the waters of a country in which it could be arrested.

At the beginning of September 2019, the Adrian Darya 1 stopped 70 kilometers off the Syrian coast. According to the findings of the Tanker Trackers Internet portal , the cargo was loaded onto smaller ships at the beginning of October 2019 and delivered to Syria.

Technical specifications

The ship is of a seven-cylinder - diesel engine of the type with 7S80MC 24,485  kW power driven. The engine from MAN B&W was built under license by Hyundai Heavy Industries. It acts on a propeller .

The ship has 15 cargo tanks. The capacity of the tanks is 331,536 m³. That corresponds to 2.084 million barrels or roughly the daily German crude oil consumption.
