Affodill ( Asphodelus ) forms a genus of plants in the subfamily of the Affodillaceae (Asphodeloideae) from the family of the grass tree plants (Xanthorrhoeaceae).

description

The Affodill species are usually perennial , herbaceous plants with a thickened rhizome or annual to biennial plants with fibrous roots. They have basal, rosette-like leaves .

The flowers are grouped in racemes or panicles . The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six bracts are white or light pink in color. In contrast to the species of the genus Asphodeline , the flowers have stamens of equal length . Globular, leathery and triple pod fruits are formed which contain the black tetrahedral seeds.

Occurrence

The occurrence of the Affodill species extends over the entire Mediterranean area and continues from there eastward to India .

There are 16 species in the genus Affodill (from Latin affodilus and asphodilus from Greek), which can be divided into five sections:

Sect. Asphodelus

Sect. Verineopsis Maire

Sect. Verinea (Pomel) Baker ex Boiss.

  • Asphodelus ayardii Jahand. & Maire , based in the western Mediterranean and the Canaries.
  • Tubular affodil ( Asphodelus fistulosus L. ), widespread in the Mediterranean area, transported to other continents, occurs in two subspecies.
  • Asphodelus tenuifolius Cav. , with home in the Mediterranean and Saharan North Africa as well as from southern Spain, Greece , southwest Asia to northern India; abducted to Australia .

Sect. Clausonia (Pomel) Bonnet & Baratte

Sect. Plagiasphodelus J. Gay

  • Asphodelus refractus Boiss. , with home in the desert regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
  • Asphodelus viscidulus Boiss. , with home in the desert regions of North Africa from eastern Algeria to the northwestern Arabian Peninsula.

Without assignment to a section:

  • Asphodelus bakeri Breistr. (Syn. Aspodelus comosus Baker ), native to the western Himalayas.
