Agathosma betulina (including buchu , Bucco , Bucco or Bukkostrauch is called) a shrub and one of about 140 species of the genus Agathosma from the family of Rutaceae , which in South Africa is indigenous.

Agathosma betulina is a shrub up to two meters tall with light to yellow-green, stiff leaves , they are about 20 millimeters long and ten millimeters wide. The stem is rough and reddish brown and has four longitudinal furrows. The flowers are white or pink.

The shrub grows on sandy hills and slopes in the range of 300 to 700 meters above sea level.

Agathosma betulina is said to be used as a medicinal plant against urinary tract infections and against complaints of the prostate and kidneys . The leaves and the oil obtained from them should be used for this. The shrub is used to make perfumes .

The plant is used by indigenous peoples of South Africa as a traditional medicine to treat the kidneys and urinary bladder , for diuresis (drainage) and to treat inflammation . The essential oil of the plant is obtained by steam distillation, is known as a cassis aroma and has a high proportion of monoterpenes . Flavonoids have also been isolated.

The plant is said to be beneficial for infections of the urinary and genital organs , cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) and prostatitis ( inflammation of the prostate gland) as well as painful micturition (evacuation of the bladder). Sheets should be used for this.
