history

The Swiss Student Association (StV) has its origins in the conflicts that the radical liberals (supporters of strengthening the central power of the confederation and the separation of state and church) and the conservatives (supporters of cantonal sovereignty and the interaction between church and state) in 19th century made opponents. This antagonism reached its climax during the Sonderbund War , which resulted in the defeat of the Catholic-Conservative cantons.

Due to their origins, the StV and its connections, including the GV Agaunia, have privileged contacts with the Swiss Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) and the Catholic hierarchy. The applicant who wants to become a member of the GV Agaunia is not obliged to be a member of the CVP or a regular churchgoer. Since 1977 the StV has been open to all Christian students, including those who are not of a Catholic denomination, but a member must be a believer and agree to Christian ideals.

Founding phase, values and goals

The GV Agaunia was founded on November 2nd, 1859. In the original protocol it says:

"2. November 1859. Foundation of the "Section Agaunoise des Etudiants Suisses". Members: Messrs. Adolphe Riche, Nicolas Taramarcaz, Henri Bioley, philosophy students, Georges Bioley, student in Rhetoric II. The following appointments were made: Senior of the Association Mr. A. Riche; Librarian of the Association Mr. H. Bioley; Quaestor Mr. Taramarcaz. The Senior, Librarian, and Quaestor form the Association's Committee. The meeting will take place every Thursday. "

Henri Bioley and Adolph Riche were undoubtedly the driving forces behind the founding of the "Section Agaunoise des Etudiants Suisses". After it was approved as an association, the founders worked diligently on the further development, because they were firmly convinced that it was useful to unite the Catholic student youth in preparation for the political struggles that were very fierce in Switzerland at the time . This intention can be clearly seen in the first articles of the statutes, which were approved on December 1, 1859:

"The goal of the 'Section Agaunoise des Etudiants Suisses' is the same as the goal of the Swiss Student Association, that is:
  • Virtue: preserving and growing the faith of the fathers and the love of virtue in Catholic students;
  • Science: stimulating the desire to study and preparing students for the tasks of their future vocation, for example by writing literary and scientific essays;
  • Friendship: cultivating friendship and preparing the students' hearts for the noble sacrifices that love of the country requires, as well as for the unity that comes from it. "

The specific goal of GV Agaunia is to participate in the everyday life of the Lycée-Collège de l'Abbaye de Saint-Maurice and to carry out various activities with the students.

Theatrical performances

For many years the GV Agaunia organized the performance of plays at the College; again and again with great success. The first record of a play is dated December 20, 1885. The association intended to premiere at Easter. At the next meetings, however, there was no more talk of performances. From 1897 the GV Agaunia played a piece for the carnival . In 1928, after the official performance, which was played at the end of each school year, ceased, the association carried on its tradition alone and then organized the theaters of the college. However, the situation changed: due to the new building of the college, the GV Agaunia could no longer prepare a traditional play. This gradually led to the disappearance of the Agaunia tradition of staging plays at the college. Between 1897 and 1960 GV Agaunia organized plays on a regular basis.

150 years of Agaunia

In 2009 the Agaunia celebrated its 150th anniversary in St-Maurice, at the same time the 163rd Central Festival in Valais, in which two thousand StVer took part from August 27th to 31st, 2009. On 7 November 2009, another was in this respect Kommersbuch with Krambambuli and many participants organized.

Organization of the connection

Since GV Agaunia was founded, the statutes of the association have been changed several times and thus adapted to the requirements of the respective times. From 1888 the name Agaunia was used instead of "Section Agaunoise des Etudiants Suisses".

Since it was founded, GV Agaunia has enjoyed singing at its events. A person responsible for the list of songs was elected in 1860, later called Kapellmeister, then Cantor. In 1899, Aktivitas chose a fox major for the first time to be responsible for training applicants. The office of librarian was introduced in 1916 and later continued as archivist. In some times the quaestor was either the scriptor or the consenior.

The legislature of the committee was often handled differently. In the present, the committee for the following semester is elected at the general assembly at the end of the semester. Since 1984 the Agaunia has also been accepting female students.

Since 2008 she has organized a sale of roses around February 14th, the proceeds of which are given to the “Bourse de solidarité du Collège” (association that helps students with financial problems). She also regularly invites politicians to debate interesting topics. Above all, she has been organizing the student ball for almost ten years, which is always a huge success.

Symbols and accessories

The flags

GV Agaunia had five flags in its possession in the last 150 years.

  • The first flag dates from 1866 and is now considered lost.
  • The second flag received the connection in 1877. On the front is the Valais flag and on the back the holy martyr Maurice , the patron saint of the city, can be seen. It says: “Société des étudiants Suisses - Section de St-maurice” and the motto “Vertu Science Amitié” .
  • The third flag dates from 1894. The front bears the circle of the StV and the reverse "Section de St-Maurice" with the cross of St-Maurice.
  • The fourth flag from 1923 is the first to bear the current name of GV Agaunia and its date of establishment on the front. On the back is the motto of the association and for the first time also the circle of the GV Agaunia.
  • The fifth and current flag received the connection in 1950. It contains the motto, the circle and the name of the connection.
  • On November 8, 2008, the connection also received a banner for its 150th anniversary.

The circle

The circle contains the following five symbols and means: Vivat, crescat, floreat Agaunia! (Long live it grow, let Agaunia bloom!)

The colors

Colors of boys (above) and foxes (below)

The GV Agaunia is a color-bearing connection. The boy band has the colors red-white-green and the fuxen band red-white - both with silver percussion . The red color represents friendship , the white color represents science, and the green color represents virtue .

As a special feature, the senior wears three boys' ribbons: two over the right and one over the left shoulder.

The headgear

A red cap is optionally worn as headgear , although this type of cap is only worn by the three Valais associations, Agaunia , Brigensis and Rhodania . Badges can be attached to the hat. It is also customary for other members to sign it.

A cerevis is worn with the flauss .

The flauss

Member of the General Assembly in Flauss

The flauss is the official suit of the association and is used at trade fairs, parades and very official occasions such as B. at a Kommers , borne by the three members of the committee.

It consists of white trousers, a red jacket, white gloves, a three-colored scarf, boots (or black shoes with gaiters) and a cerevis. The senior carries the flag of the connection, the consenior and the fox major carry a pompous bat .

Members

Like many other associations, the GV Agaunia has two membership statuses: The new members are called foxes . Boys belong to the Agaunia for at least two semesters. The tasks of the committee are normally only allowed to take on boys. If a new member is accepted, i.e. fuchsifed , they are given a nickname called Vulgo , in this way prejudices based on their social origin are avoided.
