Agave filifera is a species of plant in the genus of agaves ( agave ). The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin words filum for "thread" and fero for "to carry". An English common name is "Thread-Leaf Agave".

description

Agave filifera grows in rosettes , remains small and forms large clumps with numerous runners . The leaf rosette reaches a diameter of 50 to 60 centimeters. The numerous green leaves are lanceolate and straight. They taper to a point, are broadest in the middle and thickened from the base to the middle of the leaf blade. The leaves, convex on both sides, are 15 to 30 centimeters long and 2 to 4 centimeters wide. The leaf surface is smooth and has white impressions of the central bud. The leaf margins have fine fibers and no radial spines . The greyish, flat top and rounded bottom is 1 to 2 centimeters long.

The 2 to 2.5 meter high inflorescence is spiked, tapered and densely flowered in the upper half. The individual flowers are stalked short, thick, curved upwards and 30 to 40 millimeters long. Their reddish tepals have similar tips 14 millimeters long. The funnel-shaped, furrowed flower tube is 5 to 6 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

The range of Agave filifera extends in Mexico from the state of San Luis Potosi over the state of Hidalgo to the state of Veracruz .

The first description was made in 1834 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . The following subspecies are distinguished:
