Ağası Məmmədov

Ağası Məmmədov (born June 1, 1980 in Baku ) is a former Azerbaijani boxer . Məmmədov was bronze medalist of the 2004 Olympic Games , silver medalist at the 2001 World Championships , European champion in 2000 and 2003 World Champion .

Career

In the youth field (U17) Məmmədov was European champion in light flyweight (-48kg) for his country of birth in 1996 .

1997 Məmmədov took on the Turkish citizenship and started for his new home under the name Agasi Ağagüloğlu at the world championships , where he was eliminated in the flyweight (-51 kg) starting in the second round. It was similar to him at the European Championships in 1998 , where he failed in the quarter-finals to Vladimir Sidorenko , Ukraine (5: 4). At the 1999 World Championships Məmmədov started in bantamweight (-54 kg), but was eliminated in the second round. Məmmədov celebrated his first victory in an international championship at the European Championships in 2000 . In the same year he also started at the Olympic Games . After victories over Mai Kangde, People's Republic of China (17: 4), and Neomar Cermeno, Venezuela (11: 3), he lost in the quarter-finals to later Olympic champion Guillermo Rigondeaux , Cuba (14: 5).

2001 Məmmədov reached the finals at the World Championships . In this he met Rigondeaux again and had to admit defeat to him again (30:24). In the same year Məmmədov won the Mediterranean Games in Tunis . Before the European Championships in 2002 , Məmmədov returned to his home country and took on the Azerbaijani citizenship again. However, the championships ended for him in the quarter-finals. Things went better for Məmmədov at the 2003 World Championships . In the last sixteen he celebrated a sensational victory over Rigondeaux (16:13) and thus the way to the world title was clear for him. In the semifinals he defeated Detelin Dalakliew , Bulgaria (21:15), and in the final Gennadi Kowaljow , Russia (17: 8). At the Olympic Games in Athens the following year , Məmmədov was the favorite in the race. After victories over Joel Brunker, Australia (RSC 3rd), Dalakliew (35:16), and Maxim Tretyak, Ukraine (32:12), he was eliminated in the semifinals against the later silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom , Thailand (27:19) and won an Olympic bronze medal.
