Agios Dimitrios ( Greek Άγιος Δημήτριος ( m. Sg. )) Is a largely dilapidated and abandoned village on the Greek island of Kos .
Surname
The current name of the place is named after the church located here, which is dedicated to St. Dimitrios ( Άγιος Δημήτριος ). Until 1950 the place was called Chaichoutes ( Χαϊχούτες ( m. Pl. )) (Name variants in Latin script : Heihoutes or Haihoutes ).
Location, geography, traffic
Agios Dimitrios is about 7 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of the city of Kos at about 270 to 290 meters above sea level (center of the settlement). The mountain village of Zia is about 2 kilometers as the crow flies. It is about 14 kilometers as the crow flies to Kos Airport.
history
According to the French archaeologist Olivier Rayet , the small hamlet of Khaikoutais ( Χαϊχούταις ) is said to have consisted of 30 houses grouped around a well in the second half of the 19th century . Over the decades, the resident population decreased more and more. Today some houses have been restored and there is a kafenio and a small museum in town.
The village was designated as a “Historic Site” in 2013 because it is a characteristic example of a rural settlement of traditional Dodecanese architecture around 1840.
