Agostino Bertani (born October 19, 1812 in Milan , † April 30, 1886 in Rome ) was an Italian doctor, patriot and politician. He was one of the pioneers of the Italian health care system, organized the activities of Mazzini and Garibaldi during the Italian Wars of Independence and founded the radical liberal party Estrema sinistra storica in Italy on May 26, 1877 . Bertani was an active freemason .

Life

From 1840, the graduate of the University of Pavia worked as a surgeon at the Maggiore Hospital in Milan, where he founded the Gazzetta medica italiana (Medical Journal of Italy) in 1842 .

The friend of Cattaneos and Mazzinis prepared the five-day uprising of March 1848 in Milan. After 1848 he organized as a medical officer in the volunteer corps Garibaldi treating the wounded in almost all battles during the three Italian wars of independence. In 1860 Garibaldi made him Prodictator of Sicily . After Garibaldi's victory at the Volturno , Bertani became General Secretary of the Provisional Government in Naples.

In 1861 Bertani was elected to the parliament of the Kingdom of Italy and sat there on the left bank.

In 1862 Bertani turned against Garibaldi's move to Rome, but in the following disputes - in 1866 against the Austrians in Northern Italy and a year later against the Pope - he again stood by Garibaldi's side.

As a parliamentarian, Bertani campaigned against the taxation of Italian farmers and for universal suffrage in the years after 1870 and took care of the two problem areas of education and health care . Depretis commissioned him in 1881 to draft a code of public health care.

Bertani emerged as an author.
