Agostino Giuseppe Giovanni Maria Mathis (* 29. January 1940 in Turin ) is an Italian diplomat in retirement .

Career

On November 26, 1962, he completed a degree in law and on April 1, 1965, a degree in political science .

On September 1, 1964, he joined the foreign service. From November 28, 1964 he was employed in the Foreign Ministry. From September 1, 1965, he was employed as a civil servant. On November 3, 1966, he was appointed Secretary of the Third Class. From September 15, 1967, he was Vice Consul in New York City , where he was appointed Secretary of the Second Class on December 21, 1967, and Secretary of the First Class on December 30, 1969. On July 7, 1970, he was accredited as First Class Legation Secretary at UN Headquarters . From July 12, 1972, he was first-class delegation secretary in Beijing , where he was appointed Legation Councilor on May 1, 1974. From October 22, 1974 he was Counselor in Tokyo . From April 1, 1977 he was a delegation counselor in Department 3. From June 29, 1977 to June 29, 1978 he received further training at the Diplomatic Institute. From June 29, 1978 he was Legation Counselor in Department 9. On January 12, 1980 he received Exequatur as Consul General in Sydney . From March 15, 1983, he was Minister Counselor next to the United Nations Office in Geneva . From January 21, 1986, he was Counselor on Special Service in Rome. On November 21, 1986, he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Second Class Plenipotentiary. From March 30, 1987, he was Envoy Extraordinary and Second Class Plenipotentiary in Division 15. From September 21, 1987, he was Envoy Extraordinary and Second Class Plenipotentiary in Division 16.

From February 12, 1990 to June 13, 1994 he was ambassador to Sofia .

From June 13, 1994 to March 3, 1997 he was Ambassador to Tripoli , where he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and First Class Plenipotentiary on May 2, 1996.

From March 3, 1997, he was Envoy Extraordinary and First Class Plenipotentiary in Rome.

From April 30, 1999 to May 6, 2003, he was Ambassador to Athens , where on May 2, 1996 he was appointed Envoy and Plenipotentiary First Class.

As of May 6, 2003, he was a lecturing envoy in the Sub-Saharan Africa Department .

From August 6, 2003 to 2007 he was ambassador to Dakar and at the same time was based in Dakar with the governments in Nouakchott (Mauritania), Banjul (Gambia), Praia ( Cape Verde ), Bamako (Mali), and Conakry (Guinea) Bissau).
