Air Atlantis was the charter airline subsidiary of the Portuguese airline TAP Air Portugal . The company was dissolved in 1993.
history
In the early 1980s, the airline TAP Air Portugal carried out numerous charter flights on behalf of Western European tour operators in addition to its scheduled airline services . However, the company did not succeed in securing significant market shares in the charter flight sector. To increase its own competitiveness, the company decided in the spring of 1985 to outsource the charter services and transfer them to the newly founded subsidiary Air Atlantis .
On May 1, 1985, flight operations from Faro Airport began with a Boeing 707-320 and a Boeing 737-200 from the parent company. In the following year two Boeing 707s and two Boeing 727-100s were used. During the main season, Air Atlantis made short-term use of other TAP Air Portugal aircraft . The UK quickly became the company's main market. In addition, the company operated charter flights to Portugal from Belgium , Denmark , Germany , Finland , France , Ireland , Italy , the Netherlands , Norway , Austria and Switzerland . In 1986 Air Atlantis also briefly used a Boeing 707 on flights from Lisbon to Canada and the USA . At the end of 1986, the two Boeing 707s were retired and replaced by three rented Boeing 727-200s that had previously been in service with Delta Air Lines . At the same time, the aircraft were given a slightly different color scheme. In 1987 the first three leased Boeing 737-300s joined the fleet.
In 1991 Air Atlantis carried more than 500,000 passengers for the first time. Although the company operated up to 220 charter flights per week in 1992, it was not possible to achieve cost-covering operations. The lack of profitability of the charter flights and simultaneous economic difficulties of TAP Air Portugal led to the end of the subsidiary in the spring of 1993. Due to a restructuring of the group of companies, Air Atlantis was integrated into the parent company on April 30, 1993.
