Aita Kivi (born December 20, 1954 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian poet and writer.

Life

Aita Kivi went to school in Tallinn from 1962 to 1973 and, after graduating from high school, studied applied mathematics at the University of Tartu for a year . In 1974, however, she moved to the Tallinn Polytechnic , where she graduated as a civil engineer in 1981 . She then worked in her profession for a few years, but switched to publishing in 1983. From 1983 to 1990 she was an editor at the Valgus publishing house . She then worked as a journalist for various newspapers and magazines. Since 2009 she has been editor-in-chief of the oldest Estonian women's magazine, Eesti naine ('Estonian Woman'), which was founded in 1924.

Aita Kivi has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1993 . The Estonian journalist and poet Krister Kivi is her son.

Literary work

Aita Kivi made her debut in 1982 with poetry in literary magazines and presented her first collection of poems in 1986. She was followed by a second book in 1988, but it was only with her third book that she met with greater criticism. Her collection of short stories, Nine Open-Hearted Women (1991), was the subject of controversy. While one reviewer tried to move the stories close to pornography, another reviewer stated that the book is "quite a long way from eroticism, not to mention pornography." Yet someone else saw potential in the book, the author attested but that she is only "on the way to feminism".

As a result, Aita Kivi submitted further collections of short stories and novels, which mostly dealt with interpersonal relationships. The criticism remained ambivalent, in addition to praise and comparisons with Oscar Wilde or Emmanuelle , there were also negative voices speaking of "erotic entertainment literature". At times she has been compared with the successful English writer Catherine Cookson , but also with Jane Austen .

The female perspective is always emphasized in her work, so that Aita Kivi has been compared to Kati Murutar or Kadri Kõusaar . In general, it can be said that Aita Kivi always “describes the intimate and sexual feelings of a woman in a love relationship with relatively great openness”.
