Ajuga orientalis , also called Oriental Günsel , is a species of Günsel ( Ajuga ) within the mint family (Lamiaceae).

description

Ajuga orientalis grows as a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 60 centimeters. It forms short rhizomes as persistence organs. The aboveground parts of the plant are hairy more or less densely woolly and shaggy. The lower leaves are 3 to 9 (to 12) centimeters long and 1.5 to 4 (to 5) centimeters wide, ovate to oblong and crenate or crenate-serrated or sometimes slightly lobed.

The bracts are egg-shaped, mostly shallowly lobed and tinged with blue, the upper ones are shorter than the flowers. The pseudo whorls of the inflorescence are distant from each other; they are four- to six-flowered (rarely up to twelve-flowered). The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals , 5 to 8 millimeters long, are fused tubular over about half of their length. The blue-violet corolla is 10 to 13 (to 18) millimeters long. The corolla tube towers above the chalice, it has no hair ring inside. The upper lip of the crown is clearly bilobed. A special feature is the twisted crown tube; the blue-violet, three-lobed lower lip with an extensive whitish mark is directed upwards, the two-lobed upper lip downwards. The stamens are enclosed in the corolla tube.

Phenology

The flowering period extends from March to July.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32, or 64.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Ajuga orientalis includes Sardinia , Sicily and Calabria , Albania , all regions of Greece , Bessarabia and the Crimea as well as the entire Caucasus region , all of Turkey with the exception of Mesopotamia and the southeast, northwestern Iran , the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus , the western one Syria and Lebanon , northern Israel and the West Bank, and northwestern Jordan .

Ajuga orientalis thrives in maquis , on gravel fields and in shady ruderal areas . In Turkey it inhabits altitudes between sea level and 3100 m.

Taxonomy

The first publication of Ajuga orientalis was in 1753 by Carl von Linné . Synonyms of Ajuga orientalis L. are: Bugula orientalis (L.) Mill. , Bulga orientalis (L.) Kuntze , Bugula obliqua Moench , Ajuga orientalis var. Condensata Boiss.

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Ajuga orientalis subsp. orientalis
  • Ajuga orientalis subsp. aenesia (Heldr.) Phitos & Damboldt (Syn .: Ajuga orientalis var. aenesia Heldr. ): It differs from the nominate form in the striking purple-purple colored bracts with few deep teeth and the more compact inflorescence; it is endemic to the Greek island of Kefalonia . However, it is not accepted in the World Checklist of Lamiaceae .
