The Akademik (Bulgarian Академик ) is a stern trawler built in 1979 , which the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has been using as a research ship since 1984 .
Construction and technical data
The trawler is part of the 502 EM project from the former Soviet and, since 1991, Ukrainian shipyard Kusnja na Rybalskomu in Kiev . From 1971 to 2009, the shipyard built a total of 347 units of this series, also known as the Vasily Yakovenko class or Vasily Jakowenko class . The trawler was laid down under hull number 1467 , only the year of construction 1979 is known.
The length of the ship is 55.50 meters, it is 9.80 meters wide and has a draft of 4.80 meters. It is measured with 905 GT or 272 NRZ and has a displacement of 1225 tons. The drive consists of a four - stroke diesel engine of the type 8 NVD 48 AV from the manufacturer VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" from Magdeburg , whose output is 736 kW . This acts on a controllable pitch propeller . The ship reaches a speed of 10.5 knots . It has a range of 7,500 nautical miles and can stay at sea for up to 35 days. Two diesel generators with 150 kVA each and two diesel generators with 100 kVA apparent power each are available for power supply. The harbor and emergency generator has an apparent power of 220 kVA.
The crew consists of 20 men. There is also space for up to 22 scientists. There are seven single and 18 double cabins available on board. Four laboratory rooms are available for science. The open working deck in the aft area is 89 m².
history
After completion in 1979, Sudoimport , the foreign trade company of the USSR, delivered the trawler to the Istanbul company Altinel , which used it as Altinel I in fishing. Due to unresolved fishing rights between Greece and Turkey , the Altinel I only remained in use for a few years and was then for sale. In 1984 the Institute of Oceanology in Varna acquired the ship and had it converted into a research ship. Since used, western research vessels were too expensive for the country and at the same time used, militarily usable technology was on the western embargo list, the Academy of Sciences preferred a used ship that it could equip itself. With the renewed commissioning on July 24, 1984, Varna became the new home port of the ship now called Akademik . The area of operation is the Black Sea , where it remained the only research ship for a long time.
A modernization, including the new equipment with navigation and research equipment, took place in 1988. After the democratic upheavals in Eastern Europe that followed in 1989, the Academy of Sciences lacked the money for further modernization and, at times, even maintenance work, so that the next general overhauls did not follow until 2001 and 2006. Scientific plans to upgrade and use the ship for polar expeditions were not pursued further due to the lack of funding.
The Institute for Oceanology was the only research ship in the country to use the academy for all research tasks from the start: It is used for physical, chemical, biological, geological and ecological studies. These include, for example, studies on hydrophysics , geology , hydrochemistry , geophysics , hydrobiology , hydrometeorology or geomorphology . Since the country joined the European Union in 2007, the ship has been involved in European research and the academy has been part of the European ESFRI project “Eurofleets”. Since then, other priorities have been added: They include ecological monitoring in accordance with the European Union's Water Framework Directive , geological mapping of the Bulgarian economic zone, assessment of fish stocks and research into the country's cultural and historical underwater heritage.
In particular, the areas of ecology and environmental pollution have been taken up in the media , in addition to underwater archeology , outside of the scientific specialist articles: In 2002 , the academy served as the basis for investigating ancient shipwrecks off the Bulgarian coast in underwater archeology and in 2018 scientists started an expedition on board the ship, to study the level of pollution of the Black Sea with plastic waste , heavy metals and other substances.
