history

Founded in 1968 as a chamber orchestra , the ASO Munich soon developed into a large symphony orchestra that has held a permanent place in the musical life of Munich and Upper Bavaria for over 40 years. The focus of his musical work is the classical-romantic repertoire; But modern works are also regularly on the program - from Mahler and Strauss to Stravinsky, from Bartók to Shostakovich.

The ASO Munich was decisively shaped by decades of continuous collaboration with the founding conductor Heinz Große Boymann from Eichenau , who has been the orchestra's honorary conductor since 2008. After a two-year working phase with the young Argentinian conductor Emiliano Greizerstein, the orchestra elected Nazanin Aghakhani as its new chief conductor in November 2010 . In her programming she also advocated the performance of contemporary compositions.

Carolin Nordmeyer has been leading the orchestra since 2012 . In addition to the symphonic activity, the operatic repertoire was further developed under her. For the 50th anniversary of the orchestra in 2018, Richard Strauss ' Alpine Symphony was performed for the first time in orchestra history .

The ASO Munich has been working closely with the Fürstenfeld Philharmonic Choir since 1978 and, in addition to its regular appearances in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence , has since performed annual concerts in the monastery basilica of Fürstenfeldbruck and Benediktbeuern, the great oratorios and requisites by Verdi, Brahms, Bach, Mendelssohn- Bartholdy, Mozart, Puccini, Fauré and many more. The highlight of the collaboration was the scenic opera projects. The first productions of “ Le nozze di Figaro ”, “ The Magic Flute ”, “ Don Pasquale ” and “ Der Freischütz ” were produced in the mid-1970s , with the orchestra and choir, at that time still with makeshift scenery, in various gymnasiums and multi-purpose halls in the Munich area performed. In 1993, the ASO inaugurated the Germering town hall with an opulently equipped performance of Verdi's “ Aida ” and performed “ Die Fledermaus ”, “ Carmen ”, “ Un ballo in maschera ”, “ The Bartered Bride ” and Hans Possega's “ Der Brentan “(Premiere) on. In 2006, " Cavalleria rusticana / Bajazzo " followed in the newly built event forum in Fürstenfeldbruck. " Zar und Zimmermann " also took place there in 2012 . In 2015 and 2017 the operas “ Die Perlenfischer ” and “ Nabucco ” followed.

Since 2012 the orchestra has been working regularly with the Munich association KulturRaum , which enables socially disadvantaged people to attend concerts free of charge.

It was a special honor for the orchestra that in the long years of its concert activity it was able to attract well-known soloists, including a. Hermann Prey , Israela Margalit , Nicolas Economou , Hans Sotin , Miriam Gauci , Angela-Maria Blasi , Jan-Hendrik Rootering , Wolfgang Brendel , Fabio Armiliato , Judith Beckmann , Marilyn Schmiege , Florian Uhlig or Benjamin Moser . Several CD recordings document the extensive and varied repertoire of the orchestra. The concert chronicle of all works performed by the orchestra shows that the ASO Munich has played almost all of the literature common in today's concert business.
