Vegetative characteristics

The acanthus-leaved boarwort is a thistle-like, perennial herbaceous plant . Their unbranched stem is up to 10 centimeters high. The green leaves are arranged in a rosette. The leaf blades, which are pinnate to the middle, are wavy, densely felted underneath and spiky toothed. They are about 10-30 inches long and 6-15 inches wide.

Generative characteristics

The cup-shaped inflorescence is single and reaches a diameter of 10-15 centimeters. It contains many golden yellow tubular flowers , which are also surrounded by golden yellow bracts . The inner bracts are about 35-5 millimeters long, yellowish on top and brownish on the underside. The chaff leaves are not thickened at the tip. The fruits are about 5–6 millimeters long, the pappus is 20–25 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Locations

Carlina acanthifolia thrives at altitudes of 500 to 1800 meters. The locations are mainly calcareous dry grasslands .

Systematics and distribution

Carlina acanthifolia was first published by Carlo Allioni .

Carlina acanthifolia is widespread in southern Europe from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkan Peninsula and to Romania and the Ukraine. In Germany she is a locally naturalized neophyte . For example, it has been naturalized in a dry grassland on the Enz between Mühlhausen and Lomersheim near Mühlacker in Baden-Württemberg and near Bamberg in Bavaria since around 1970–80.

The species Carlina acanthifolia comprises about three subspecies:

  • Carlina acanthifolia All. subsp. acanthifolia : It occurs only in France and Italy.
  • Carlina acanthifolia All. subsp. cynara (Pourr. ex DC.) Arcang. : It occurs in Spain, Andorra and France.
  • Carlina acanthifolia All. subsp. utzka (Hacq.) Meusel & Kästner (Syn .: Carlina utzka Hacq. , Carlina onopordifolia Szafer & al. ): It occurs on the Balkan Peninsula, in Poland, Moldova and in the Ukraine. The chromosome number of this subspecies is also 2n = 20.

Use

Just like Carlina acaulis , Carlina acanthifolia is also used as a weather indicator, e.g. B. used to predict rainy weather. An explanation can be found under weather thistle .
