The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil (Original title: Aginjeon ) is an action thriller from the South Korean director Lee Won-tae from 2019.

action

The film is set in the city of Cheonan in 2005 . There is a rear-end collision. Suddenly the person who caused the accident pulls a knife and stabs the driver of the other car. Commissioner Jung Tae-seok is to investigate. For Jung, it looks like a serial killer, as two other murders have victims with the same depth of cut. However, this seems to his colleagues as far-fetched. Shortly afterwards, gang boss Jang Dong-su also had a rear-end collision. Jang doesn't care and tells the person who caused the accident to forget about it. But this stabbed Jang. Jang can defend himself and inflict injuries on the perpetrator. All that remains for him is to flee. He runs to his car, runs over Jang and escapes.

Jang's gang suspects the gang leader Hur Sang-do, who is officially fraternized with Jang's group, to be behind the attack. You mix it up. But when Jang wakes up in the hospital, he calls her back. The person who attacked him is not your typical gangster. Jung Tae-seok immediately suspects the same perpetrator and seeks Jang in the hospital. Both know each other as Jung repeatedly raids Jang's gambling halls. That is why Jang does not want to help him, but rather confront the perpetrator himself to kill him. But Jung does not give in. The two agree to work together. Whoever catches him first should be able to do what he wants with him.

reception

The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil screened in South Korean cinemas on May 15, 2019 and celebrated its international premiere on May 22, 2019 at the 2019 Cannes International Film Festival , where it was shown out of competition in the competition. In South Korea, the film reached more than 3.36 million admissions. It celebrated its German premiere at the Fantasy Filmfest 2019 ; On November 22nd, 2019, it will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Germany . The film received mostly positive reviews and holds an aggregate value of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes .

In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, Deborah Young rates The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil as a good action film with a humorous side but also with potential for improvement for the announced remake. Jessica Kiang writes in Variety that Korea has dominated midnight movies at film festivals so strongly in recent years that it is difficult not to compare this film with Train to Busan , The Age of Shadows or The Wailing . It is entertaining, but not original enough to go down as a classic in Korean cinema history. Ma Dong-seok also steals the show from everyone else, which is not good for the work. The camera work, Young and Kiang agree, is flawless, magnificent and professional. Jason Bechervaise predicts international success for the film in Screen Daily as a Korean genre film that was shown in Cannes . Kim Mu-yeol and Kim Sung-kyu delivered notable performances in their roles, but Ma Dong-seok is the clear star of the film. Overall, the film solidly implements a simple idea. For Cary Darling of the Houston Chronicle , the film is a compelling cat-and-mouse game, with all three of the main characters doing well. The film is also tailored to Ma Dong-seok.

After Haleigh Foutch of Collider South Korea by directors such as Park Chan-wook , Kim Jee-woon and Bong Joon-ho generally recognized as a country of the best thriller of the 21st century. This means The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil would be in great competition. Although the film cannot rise to the top ranks of the South Korean thriller cinema, it is still daring, captivating and exciting with artistic imagery. According to Beatrice Behn from Kino-Zeit, “would (er) only be common genre food if the unusual liaison between law and underworld, which otherwise divides films of this kind into two worlds, did not spark a completely new and downright absurdly exciting dynamic”.

Remake

Sylvester Stallone's production company Balboa Productions is planning a remake of the film, in which Ma Dong-seok is to star again , together with the South Korean producer BA Entertainment .
