The Akizuki class ( Japanese き づ き 型 護衛艦 Akizuki-gata goeikan ) is a class of four anti-submarine destroyers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF). She is the third grade with that name in a Japanese Navy. Predecessors were a destroyer class from 1941 and a destroyer class from 1959 .

General

The Akizuki- class is a further development of the previous Takanami-class and partially replaced the destroyers of the Hatsuyuki-class in service. They serve as escorts for the Aegis destroyers ( Kongō and Atago classes ) and the helicopter carriers ( Hyūga and Izumo classes ) of the self-defense forces and are intended to protect them against submarine attacks.
