Alan Hodgkinson (* 16th August 1936 in Rotherham , South Yorkshire , † 8. December 2015 in Coventry ) was an English football - goalkeeper . He later worked as an assistant coach in English and Scottish football, but mainly worked as a goalkeeper coach .

Athletic career

Hodgkinson joined the English first division side Sheffield United in the First Division in the summer of 1953 from Worksop Town . He had to wait until the following summer for his league debut. As a result, he was mostly just a substitute behind Ted Burgin, not least because of his military service . After relegation to the second division in 1956, he was used more often and finally played his way into the circle of the English national team , for which he made his debut in the British Home Championship in April 1957 in the final 2-1 win over Scotland , which won the Tournament meant.

In the season 1957/58 he had finally established himself as the goalkeeper of his club, but initially fought with Eddie Hopkinson for the place between the posts in the national team . Appointed to the squad for the 1958 World Cup , debutant Colin McDonald ousted both and was in goal throughout the tournament. Although he was still a member of the national team, he was only second choice, this time behind Ron Springett . Although he had completed his last of five international matches in 1960, he was a substitute alongside Gordon Banks in the squad at the 1962 World Cup .

With Hodgkinson as support, Sheffield United returned to the first division in 1961. Under coach John Harris , he achieved the best result with Sheffield in the first year after promotion with fifth place. He then gradually slipped with the team and rose again in 1968 with her in the second division. Until 1971 he ran for the club before he started his coaching career.

After a stay as a goalkeeping coach with the Scottish national team, Hodgkinson later returned to Sheffield United as an assistant coach. He also worked for Manchester United and Everton FC and spotted goalkeeping talent for the clubs. In 2001 he worked in the youth division of Glasgow Rangers before joining Coventry City as goalkeeping coach in 2002 . After an engagement at Rushden & Diamonds , he later took the same position at Oxford United .

In 2008 Hodgkinson received the Order of the British Empire .
