Alan Kelly Jr. (born August 11, 1968 in Preston , England ) is a retired Irish football player who played on the position of goalkeeper.

Player career

society

Kelly began his career at Preston North End in the Football League Fourth Division , succeeding his father Alan Kelly senior , who played 447 games for Preston. His older brother Gary is also a former goalkeeper.

For a transfer fee of 150,000 pounds, he moved to Sheffield United in July 1992 . He stayed with Sheffield until 1999, despite their relegation from the Premier League and came to 213 missions.

In 1999 Kelly moved to the Blackburn Rovers , where he came to 50 competitive appearances by 2004. Kelly was mostly just a spectator behind the American Brad Friedel , who joined the Rovers in 2000 . This was also the case with the final of the League Cup , when he was only a spectator. After Friedel's arrival in Blackburn, Kelly slipped to third goalkeeper behind John Filan . For this reason he toyed with the idea of leaving the club in the winter of 2001. Filan, who was also dissatisfied as number two, came before Kelly and the club did not allow a change. In the meantime, the Irishman was awarded to Stockport County and Birmingham City for a period of one month. After the 2003/04 season he ended his active career.

National team

Kelly made 34 appearances for the Irish national team and was a member of the Irish national team at the 1994 and 2002 World Cups . However, the goalkeeper did not appear in a World Cup. In 1994 he was number two behind Pat Bonner , eight years later he had to give way to Shay Given . The goalkeeper did not particularly like the role of spectator in 2002. After he stood between the posts of the Irish national team in the first qualifying matches, coach Mick McCarthy put him on the bench after fluctuations in performance and injury at the end of qualification.

Coaching career

In the summer of 2006, Kelly was a goalkeeping coach at the academy soccer camps in Virginia , Maryland , Delaware and Pennsylvania in the United States . For the 2007/08 season he returned to his former club Blackburn Rovers , where he was henceforth a goalkeeping coach in the youth department.

He is currently the goalkeeping coach of the Irish national team.
