The Albatros was a French patrol boat that was used in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories .

history

The ship was built at the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime shipyard in Le Trait on the Seine as a trawler for the French company Société Navale Caennaise (SNC). The launch took place on December 12, 1966. In 1967 the trawler was commissioned as Névé with the fishing license number LH 277. The Société Navale Caennaise and the Société Havraise de Pêche, a subsidiary of SNC, used the ship until 1983 for fishing in the North Atlantic . It was then sold to the French Navy, which had it converted into a patrol boat at DCAN Toulon .

In May 1984 the French Navy put the ship, renamed Albatross , into service. It was stationed on Réunion and served to monitor the exclusive economic zone of France in its southern and Antarctic regions with a focus on the control of fishing vessels .

The ship was used repeatedly for humanitarian missions. In 2009 the ship took part in the European Operation Atalanta in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden .

In 2015 the Albatros was decommissioned. Its tasks were taken over by L'Astrolabe, which entered service in 2017 .

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship was diesel electrically by two electric motors, each with 810  kW power that a propeller worked. For electricity generation were two SACM- Wärtsilä - diesel engines (type: UD33V12S4) kW each with 1120 power available drives the two generators.

The drive system or parts of it were renewed or rebuilt several times. The ship's electricity requirements were initially met by three generators powered by MAN diesel engines. The engines were replaced as early as 1970. A major reconstruction of the drive system took place in 1990 in Lorient .

The ship could stay at sea for 60 days. The range was 25,000  nautical miles at 9  knots and 14,700 nautical miles at 14 knots.

On board there was space for 50 crew members and 15 passengers.

The ship was equipped with an infirmary with six beds.
