The Albert Schweitzer School is a grammar school in Offenbach am Main . Originally founded as a "Higher Daughter School", it has had its current name since 1956. It is named after the doctor and philosopher Albert Schweitzer .

Since 1991 the school has been a UNESCO project school and a school sports center in cooperation with elementary schools, secondary schools and clubs, for example the First Offenbach Swimming Club (EOSC for short).

The school building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

history

On September 26, 1853, the Höhere Töchterschule , an all girls' school, opened its doors in Geleitsstrasse in Offenbach. In 1876 the girls' school is recognized as a higher school in Hesse. As early as 1884, the school was expanded to include an extension due to the high number of visitors. The next extensions follow in 1907 and 1916.

In 1956, the Höhere Töchterschule moved to the school in Waldstrasse, which was built between 1909 and 1911 as the Grand Ducal High School on Friedrichsplatz and was given its current name shortly afterwards. In 1957, the school first took in boys.

particularities

The Albert Schweitzer School is a school sports center. To promote talent, there are special sports classes in which particularly sporty students are specifically encouraged. Part of this funding is the opportunity to train once a week in the mornings for a specific sport during school hours.

In 1991 the school was included in the network of UNESCO project schools as one of 19 Hessian schools (as of December 2014) . A special focus is the commitment to environmental protection and compulsory upbringing in terms of human rights . See also: List of UNESCO project schools in Germany .

Since the beginning of 2016, the Albert Schweitzer School has been one of the so-called independent schools . The Hessian Ministry of Culture gave the grammar school more freedom in teaching and finances.

building

Grand Ducal High School on Friedrichsplatz, today Albert Schweitzer School (around 1915)

In 1908, the site for today's school was acquired and plans for a secondary school were drawn up by government architect Völker. Since the Waldstraße was already very busy at that time, the classrooms should be as far away from it as possible. The municipal shower bath was built around a rectangular schoolyard on the south-east corner on Waldstrasse, and the porter's house and a school servant's house on the opposite north-east corner. Both buildings were connected by a single-storey foyer, which was used for the pupils to stay outdoors in bad weather. The toilet facilities were connected to the school servant's apartment, followed by the gym, which was designed as a gymnasium and ballroom. The three-story classroom wing adjoins it at right angles to the west.

The architecture was in the local style in the Hessian style . The building is reminiscent of palace complexes from the Renaissance period with its high gables and large, slate-covered roof areas, which are divided into two inner houses . The two stairwells were particularly highlighted as towers. Inside, particular emphasis was placed on a well-coordinated color decoration, some of which is still there today. The gym has a height of 10.30 meters and is covered by a barrel vault. Since it serves as an auditorium and public lecture room at the same time, it is lavishly equipped and the gymnastics equipment can be placed in the side rooms. Despite some modern changes and damage, for example the fires on the south wing in 1987 and 1990, the school is in a very good state of preservation. As a complex modeled on the style of a renaissance castle and with the elaborate architectural details under the influences of Art Nouveau , it has great artistic importance and is a listed building .
