Albert Amann (born September 14, 1879 in Konstanz , † January 16, 1965 in Überlingen ) was a Baden politician of the Center Party and, after 1945, the CDU .

Life

Albert Amann was born on September 14, 1879 in Konstanz as the son of the stone carver Johann Amann from Hohenems (Vorarlberg) and his wife Viktoria, née. Rees born. In 1898 he joined the Catholic journeyman's association . After his apprenticeship as a locksmith (1894-1897), his wandering as a journeyman through Germany and Bohemia and the military service from 1900 to 1902 with the Baden Pioneer Battalion 14 in Kehl, he began his professional career as a locksmith for the Baden State Railways in 1902 and switched to a ship heater in 1905 Lake Constance shipping . He was a founding member of the Christian metal workers' association (1899), a member of the Baden locomotive officials' association and the Baden railway workers' association (1911) as well as the Rhine shipping association in Constance. Due to his stance against the National Socialists , he was considered an unreliable person and was prematurely retired in 1937 as a ship's chief engineer. During the Second World War , he did temporary work as an insurance agent and church servant. Forced by a Reich Emergency Ordinance, he worked from 1943 to 1945 as the harbor master of the railway in Constance. After the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, the Gestapo attempted arrest as part of the Gewitter campaign in August 1944 .

Albert Amann died on January 16, 1965 in Überlingen.

From his marriage to his wife Maria geb. Walter had three children. His son Konrad Amann (1912–1997) was a Catholic priest. The Swiss writer Jürg Amann and the Swiss painter Urs Amann are great-nephews of Albert Amann.

In addition to his involvement in the journeyman's association and the Christian trade union, he joined the center party and was elected deputy chairman of the center party of the Seekreis . From 1917 to 1919 he was a city councilor in Konstanz. In 1919 he was sent to the Constituent Assembly of Baden as a member of constituency I. From 1919 to 1933 he was a member of the Baden Landtag (1st –IVth Landtag period). As a member of parliament, he mainly represented the interests of workers, the agricultural and fishing industries and the concerns of the communities, and advocated improvements in the transport system. From 1922 he was secretary of the state parliament and was a member of the Appeals and Complaints Committee . In the state parliament session on December 19, 1930, he was involved in the dispute with the NSDAP MP Herbert Kraft . When the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he lost his political functions.

After 1945 Albert Amann campaigned for the newly founded Badisch-Christian-Soziale Volkspartei (BCSV), a forerunner of the CDU. From 1946 to 1947 he was together with Carl Diez deputy chairman of the Konstanz-Land district association.

Because of his knowledge of the region and residents, the BCSV / CDU nominated him for the district assembly of the district of Constance in 1946 . In the three electoral terms from 1946 to 1959 he held leading positions: from 1946 to 1953 Albert Amann was deputy chairman of the district assembly and from 1954 to 1959 deputy chairman of the district council and the district council. He was a member of the working group of the Baden districts and, from October 1956, in the district assembly of South Baden and in the main committee of the district assembly of Baden-Württemberg as well as a representative in the municipal labor law association. His commitment was to the unification of the formerly separated states of Baden, Württemberg and Hohenzollern, the communal events especially the small communities and the creation of social institutions in the district of Constance.
