Albert Plehn
Albert Plehn (born April 14, 1861 in Lubochin ( Schwetz district / West Prussia); † May 17, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German tropical medicine specialist .
Live and act
After graduating from high school in Marienwerder , he studied medicine at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel until 1886, where he was awarded a doctorate in the same year. med. PhD . During his studies in 1881 he became a member of the Teutonia fraternity in Kiel . He then entered the Dutch service as a ship's doctor and learned about tropical medicine on a trip to the Sunda Islands .
In Sumatra and Java he systematized quinine prophylaxis . In 1887 he continued his training at the gynecological clinic in Dresden and in 1888 at the municipal hospital in Berlin-Friedrichshain , before setting up as a general practitioner in Wandsbek in 1890 . In 1894 he went to the German colony of Cameroon as a government doctor . With his intensive research on malaria , blackwater fever , dysentery and beriberi , he made a significant contribution to improving the health of locals and Europeans. In 1903 he finished his tropical service and returned to Berlin, where he completed his habilitation that same year and was effective as a doctor of the internal department at the municipal hospital "Am Urban" . At the beginning of the First World War , Plehn signed the manifesto of the 93 .
At the University of Berlin he read as an honorary professor on clinical pathology and exotic medicine. In addition to maintaining tropical medicine, he dealt with diseases of the blood-forming organs, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and gout . Especially on tropical medicine, he wrote several papers and numerous articles, primarily in the journal Archive for Ship and Tropical Hygiene . In 1926 he retired. Then he made two sea voyages to America, where he found new scientific ideas. He was one of the "old Africans" who laid the foundations for development in the German colonies.
family
His parents were Anton Plehn (1834–1887), landowner and farmer in Lubochin, and Johanna Maercker (1838–1888). His first marriage was Marie Gütschow in 1890 and his second marriage was Carina Huch, daughter of the notary William Huch and his second wife Marie Huch , née. Gerstäcker. Carina Huch was the sister of Friedrich Huch and Felix Huch , cousin of Ricarda Huch , granddaughter of Friedrich Gerstäcker . His siblings were Friedrich Plehn (1862–1904), tropical medicine; Marianne Plehn (1865-1946), zoologist ; Rose Plehn (1865–1945), painter, and Rudolf Plehn (1868–1899), forest scientist.
His final resting place is in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .
