Albert Wigand (artist)
Albert Wigand (born August 24, 1890 in Ziegenhain ; † May 17, 1978 in Leipzig ) was a German painter , draftsman and collagist .
Life
In 1902 the Wigand family moved to Godesberg near Bonn. In 1910 Albert Wigand successfully passed his Abitur examination in Bonn . Until 1913 he attended the drawing teacher seminar with Lothar von Kunowski in Düsseldorf ( Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts ). In 1913 he stayed in Goßfelden near Marburg among the pupils of the Willingshausen painter by Otto Ubbelohde . During the First World War he was used as a medic in France . In 1916 he showed his first exhibition in the occupied northern French city of Rethel . The exhibition was initiated by Walter Kaesbach , who worked at the Nationalgalerie before the First World War. After his exhibition in Richard Hamann's gallery at the Marburg Art History Seminar in 1920, he lived in Berlin from 1923 to 1924. In 1920 he met Christian Rohlfs and Curt Herrmann on the recommendation of Professor Hamann. From 1925 he lived in Dresden , until 1956 he earned his living as a casual and unskilled worker. In 1971 Albert Wigand moved to Leipzig.
In the thirties he began to express himself artistically with his own lyrical expressionism , but had to work as a window dresser in the Residenz department store from 1930 to 1943 to secure his livelihood . Drawings of village and street scenes in Bohemia , the Ore Mountains and Lusatia followed . After the Second World War in 1945, he remained true to his motifs and expanded them with still lifes. He put elements and pieces of earlier works together to create new collages, which made his works timeless, but which are now difficult to classify chronologically. The high esteem of his work also established friendships with other artists who, like him, were on the fringes of the official art scene, such as B. Carlfriedrich Claus . His late work brought an approach to realism , albeit with a reduction in colors, shapes and motifs, which he led to their total dissolution.
Wolfgang Balzer , director of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (SKD) devoted a solo exhibition to Albert Wigand, who was almost unknown until the General German Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1946, and acquired five drawings from him. Through further acquisitions, bequests and donations, the inventory grew to 141 works up to the exhibition in the SKD's Kupferstich-Kabinett on the occasion of his 100th birthday in 1990.
