Albert Heinrich Zimmermann (born February 15, 1854 in Elbing ; † November 22, 1925 in Hildesheim ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director.

Life

Albert Zimmermann was the son of the private secretary Christian Zimmermann. The later art historian Max Georg Zimmermann (1861-1919) was his brother. Both attended the high school in Elbing, where Albert was already teaching the lower grades during the Franco-German War (1870–1871) due to the acute shortage of teachers. After graduation (Easter 1871) he went to the University of Königsberg . He studied Classical and German Philology ; on the side he did his military service in 1873/1874. In December 1874 Zimmermann passed the teaching exams in Latin, Greek and German and was then employed for a year and a half as a tutor of a Greek-English family with whom he lived in southern France and Italy. During this time he improved his French, Italian, English and modern Greek language skills.

After his return to Germany, Zimmermann went to the Andreanum grammar school in Hildesheim on October 1, 1876 , where he completed his probationary year and then worked as an assistant teacher. At Easter 1878 he switched to the Ilfeld monastery school and a year later as a full teacher at the Georgianum grammar school in Lingen (Ems) . In 1880 he passed an additional examination to become a gymnastics and swimming instructor. From Michaelis 1882 he taught at the grammar school in Wilhelmshaven (today's grammar school on Mühlenweg), where he was appointed senior teacher in 1890, grammar school professor in 1896 and director at Easter 1901. Under his directorate the grammar school was named "Kaiser-Wilhelms-Gymnasium". From 1906 it was connected to an educational seminar.

Together with other teachers, Zimmermann founded the first high school for girls in Wilhelmshaven in 1885 (today's Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium ). Until 1909 he was part of the administrative management there. Since 1880 he was born with Auguste Sonne (* 1860) married, with whom he had three children: Clara (* 1881), Max Johannes (1882–1914) and Gertrud (* 1888).

Zimmermann left Wilhelmshaven for Michaelis in 1909 and returned to the Hildesheim high school Andreanum, which he ran until his retirement (Easter 1921).

In addition to his school service, Zimmermann studied Greek and Latin literature and mythology . His research focus was the work of the late antique epic poet Quintus of Smyrna . His colleague Arthur Ludwich had pointed out Quintus to him. Zimmermann published several studies (mainly on textual criticism) and a critical edition in 1891, which remained the standard long after its publication and was reprinted in 1969.

Zimmermann's scientific estate was bequeathed to the Göttingen State and University Library by his youngest daughter Gertrud in 1926 (signature 8 ° Philol. 84 b ). It contains text-critical material on Quintus and other Greek epics ( Apollonios of Rhodes , Nonnos , Triphiodoros , Kolluthos ) and letters from Heinrich Keil , Arthur Ludwich and the publisher BG Teubner .
