The Aldebaran is a German research and sailing ship that is used to convey marine and inland water research , especially to schoolchildren and the wider public. Your home port is Hamburg .

history

The Sonate Ovni 43 ship was built in 1986. After the ship was affected by severe storm damage caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, it was repaired in the Black Forest, where it was rebuilt by volunteers and craftsmen. With the help of many sponsors and supporters, the ship was equipped for its new purpose as a research and environmental communication ship with its own laboratory and modern technology. The initiator of the project was Frank Schweikert , who is still active today as the head of the team.

The ship and the funding organization behind it are named after the star Aldebaran in the constellation Taurus .

Furnishing

The 14 meter long, aluminum built ship with a distinctive yellow color can be operated with a sail (100 m² sail area) as well as with a diesel engine . It has a speed of 5 to 8 knots and is capable of staying at sea for 30 days. It is operated by a crew of at least two people and can accommodate up to seven people when traveling.

The ship has a retractable sword and rudder . Thus it is suitable for trips on the high seas as well as in coastal areas and inland waters all over the world. The Aldebaran can be shipped on the deck of a cargo ship .

Operations and cooperation projects

The marine competition project was launched in 2005 . In cooperation with the German Ocean Foundation , schoolchildren from the 9th grade onwards are given one-week research stays on the Aldebaran in a school competition .

Until 2015, the Aldebaran stayed mainly in northern Germany, especially near Hamburg and on the Baltic Sea . There were also research visits to the waters of the Canary Islands and off Belize in Central America . In 2015 the Aldebaran sailed from Hamburg to Paris to draw attention to the consequences of global warming for the oceans in the run-up to the UN climate conference in Paris 2015 .

Every year since 2016, the Aldebaran has been organizing day excursions for selected student teams on Lake Constance for a few weeks in May and June . In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , students will not be allowed on board the ship. Instead, they follow the researchers by video stream from home. The ship has ten cameras, some of which are mounted on drones . In addition, students can communicate directly with the ship's staff via video stream and ask questions about the examinations that may arise. a. deal with the effects of climate change and microplastics . The results of the project will also be made available later for the classroom.
