Alessandro Asinari di San Marzano (Bishop)

Alessandro Asinari di San Marzano (born July 27, 1795 in Turin , † July 2, 1876 in Frascati ) was an Italian Curia Archbishop .

Life

He came from a family of the Piedmontese nobility and was the fourth son of Major General Filippo Antonio di San Marzano (1767–1828), State Councilor and Count of the French Empire, later Minister of War and Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia , and his wife Polissena Della Chiesa di Cinzano ( 1774-1832). On May 24, 1816 he received his doctorate theologiae at the Academy of Turin and was ordained a priest on September 19, 1818 . In 1835 he entered the service of the Curia and in 1836 was apostolic protonotary . On January 19, 1846, he was named titular archbishop of Ephesus . He received his episcopal ordination on January 19, 1846, the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina Luigi Emmanuele Nicolo Lambruschini CRSP ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops Gaetano Baluffi , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , and Giovanni Brunelli , Secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide . On April 26, 1846, Alessandro Asinari di San Marzano took up the position of nuncio in Brussels. In 1848 he returned to Rome and held various curial offices there. Most recently, he was First Custodian of the Vatican Library from June 27, 1853 , a position he held until his death.

He died in the Villa Conti in Frascati. He bequeathed his extensive private library to the Vatican Library in a will of June 3, 1875.
