Alessandro Sperelli (born May 10, 1589 in Assisi , † December 19, 1671 in Gubbio ) was an Italian clergyman and bishop of Gubbio .

Life

He was born the son of the noble Ottavio Sperelli. In 1610, Alessandro Sperelli received his doctorate in Perugia as Doctor iuris utriusque and appears shortly afterwards as vicar of his uncle Ascanio Sperelli , who has held the bishopric of San Severino Marche since 1607 . He later moved to Rome, where he became the auditor of Cardinal Domenico Ginnasi , made friends with Angelo Cesi , brother of the founder of the Accademia dei Lincei , Federico Cesi , and participated intensively in the rich cultural life of Rome with its diverse academies. In 1621 Alessandro Sperelli was appointed Vicar of Alessandro d'Este , at that time Bishop of Reggio di Lombardia , and in 1626 Vicar Apostolic in Parma. Two years later he became vicar to Angelo Cesi, who was Bishop of Rimini from 1627 to 1646 . Probably in 1635 he returned to Rome, where he entered the service of the Curia as Abbreviator . He later became a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signatures and Consultor of the Holy Office .

On April 28, 1642, Alessandro Sperelli was appointed auxiliary bishop of Cardinal Marcello Lante in the suburbicarian diocese of Ostia e Velletri and titular bishop of Orthosias in Caria . He was ordained bishop on May 4, 1642 by Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Lelio Falconieri , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , and Giovanni Battista Altieri (Sr.), former Bishop of Camerino . In March 1644 he was finally appointed Bishop of Gubbio. With a short break from October 23, 1652 to November 15, 1653, when he took over the apostolic nunciature in Naples with little success , Alessandro Sperelli held this bishopric until his death. His nephew, later Cardinal Sperello Sperelli , supported him as vicar for several years.

Alessandro Sperelli left behind a number of canonical and pastoral writings.
