Sperello Sperelli

Sperello Sperelli (born August 15, 1639 in Assisi , † March 22, 1710 in Rome ) was an Italian bishop and cardinal .

Life

He was the son of the nobleman Antonio Sperelli and his wife Giulia Filippucci. An ecclesiastical career was also planned for his twin brother Cesare . At the age of four, Sperello was placed in the care of his father's brother, Francesco Sperelli , who was then Bishop of San Severino Marche . At sixteen he went to the University of Perugia, where he received his doctorate on June 4, 1659, Doctor iuris utriusque . He then moved to Gubbio, where his uncle Alessandro Sperelli was bishop, and became its vicar general . In 1663 he moved to Rome to practice as a lawyer. He was ordained a priest on February 7, 1663 and worked as auditor for the cardinals Giacomo Franzoni , Giacomo and Felice Rospigliosi , Federico Colonna and Carlo Emilio Rondinini.

On January 10, 1684, Sperello Sperelli was appointed Bishop of Terni . From January 1693 to June 1698 he was vice-gentleman of Rome , after which he held various curial offices. He renounced the diocese of Terni on December 14, 1698 in favor of his brother Cesare.

Pope Innocent XII. elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of November 14, 1699 in pectore , this was published on November 24 of the same year. Sperello Sperelli received the red hat and the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina on February 3, 1700. He took part in the 1700 conclave , from which Clement XI. emerged as Pope. From February 27, 1708 to January 28, 1709 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals .

Sperello Sperelli died on March 22, 1710 at midnight in his Roman palace and was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
