Alev Alatlı

Alev Alatlı (* 1944 in Menemen ) is a Turkish economist , philosopher , columnist and bestselling author.

Life

Alatlı was born in 1944 as the daughter of an officer in western Turkey. After attending elementary and secondary schools in Turkey, she spent her youth in Japan , where her father worked as a military attaché at the Turkish embassy and later as a liaison officer for the Turkish Brigade in the Korean War at the United Nations .

Alev Alatlı attended the American School in Japan in Tokyo . After graduation, the family returned to Turkey and Alatlı studied economics at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara . She graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1963 .

After graduation, she married her fellow student Alper Orhon. Alev Alatlı received a scholarship and her husband received a Ford Foundation scholarship so they could both study in the United States. Alatlı graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville with a Master of Arts degree in Development Economics and Econometrics. In 1968/69 she taught at the US State Department and in 1969 at Caan College .

At this time she was intensively concerned with the meaning of formulas and numbers and decided to continue studying philosophy. She attended Dartmouth College , New Hampshire, and received a doctorate in the philosophy of religion and the philosophy of history .

In 1974 Alatlı returned to Turkey. For a while she worked as a lecturer at the University of Istanbul and later as an economist at the State Planning Office in Ankara.

In the five years after her return from the United States, Alev Alatlı spent most of her time studying Islam . She also worked on a psycholinguistic project at the University of California, Berkeley on language patterns in Turkish children. In cooperation with the daily Cumhuriyet, she published a magazine called Bizim İngilizce , which was supposed to convey the English language to Turks.

In 1984 she gave up her previous activities and devoted herself entirely to writing. Her first book, called Aydın Despotizmi ... was a philosophical study.

Alatlı's next work was her first novel Yaseminler Tüter mi Hala? which was released in 1985. The book was inspired by the true story of a Greek Cypriot: the protagonist was born in the monastery of Apostolos Andreas on the Karpas peninsula . She tragically died in Piraeus at the age of 32 after two marriages to a Muslim Turkish Cypriot and an Orthodox Greek. Alev Alatlı's next work was two translations into Turkish of two books by Edward Said entitled Covering Islam ( Haberlerin Ağında Islam ) and The Question of Palestine ( Filistin'in Sorunu ). For this she received the Medal of Honor from Yasser Arafat .

Alatlı's novel Işkenceci was published in 1987. This was followed by Viva la Muerte! - Yaşasın Ölüm! (1992), 'Nuke' Türkiye! (1993), Valla, Kurda Yedirdin Beni! (1993) and OK Musti! Türkiye Tamamdır. (1994). The novel Kadere Karşı Koy A.Ş. appeared in 1995. Alev Alatlı's first volume of poetry, Eylül '98 , was published in 1999. In 1999 and 2000 she wrote the futuristic books Kabus and Rüya , which deal with the thought experiment of Schrödinger's cat .

Alatlı's next novels Grace over Enlightenment , World Sentry and Eyy Uhnem! Eyy Uhnem! are the first three books of the four-volume work on Russia entitled Gogol'un İzinde . In 2066 she received the Scholochow Prize for the third novel in the series.

She has been writing a bi-weekly column for Zaman since 2002 . In 2003 the book Şimdi Değilse, Ne zaman? , which brings together in a collection of her best columns from the Zaman.
