Alexander Charles Carlile, Baron Carlile of Berriew , CBE , QC (born February 12, 1948 in Ruabon , Denbighshire ) is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ).

life and career

Carlile, son of the Jewish - Polish immigrants Erwin and Sabina Carlile, grew up in North Wales and Lancashire . He attended Epsom College and graduated from King's College London , where he graduated in law in 1969 .

In 1970 he was admitted to the Gray's Inn Bar Association . Carlile is a practicing barrister and former Head of Chambers of 9-12 Bell Yard , a premier bar association. In 1984 he was appointed Crown Attorney .

He was a lay member of the General Medical Council from 1983 to 1999 and a member of the Advisory Council on Public Records from 1989 to 1995 . He successfully defended Diana's butler , Princess of Wales , Paul Burrell , against allegations that he had stolen parts of her property. In 2001 he was appointed an independent assessor of counter-terrorism legislation.

In March 2008, Carlile resigned as Head of Chambers. Philip Katz was his successor . He has been Deputy Chief Steward of the City of Hereford since 2009 . There he was also an honorary recorder . He is the non-executive director of Wynnstay and Clwyd Farmers plc .

Membership in the House of Commons

After he had run unsuccessfully for the Liberal Party in the constituency of Flint East in the general election in February 1974 and the general election in 1979 , he succeeded in 1983 with the constituency of Montgomeryshire in the lower house . First until 1988 as a liberal and then as a liberal democratic MP. In 1997 he retired from the House of Commons and his successor in the constituency was Lembit Opik .

In the 1980s he spoke there on the death penalty, the European Convention on Human Rights, the unemployed and South Africa . He spoke up in the 1990s about the North Sea, Iraqi prisoners of war, historic buildings and transsexuals. Carlile was the first MP to stand up for the rights of transsexuals.

From 1980 to 1982 he was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Welsh Liberal Party , from 1992 to 1997 Chairman ( Leader ) of the Welsh Liberal Democrat Party and from 1997 to 1999 President of the Liberal Democrats Wales .

From 1985 to 1988 he was Liberal Spokesman for Home Affairs. In 1987 he became the Alliance's Legal Affairs spokesman . From 1988 to 1989 he was spokesman for the Social and Liberal Democrats (SLD) for foreign affairs. For the Liberal Democrats (Lib Dems), Carlile was legal affairs spokesman from 1989 to 1990, trade and industry from 1990 to 1992, Wales from 1992 to 1997, labor from 1992 to 1994, health from 1994 to 1995 and by 1995 to 1997 for Justice, Home Affairs and Immigration.

Membership in the House of Lords

Carlile was named Life Peer as Baron Carlile of Berriew, of Berriew in the County of Powys on July 27, 1999 . Its official introduction to the House of Lords took place on October 12, 1999 with the assistance of Emlyn Hooson, Baron Hooson and Geraint Howells, Baron Geraint . He gave his inaugural address on November 24, 1999.

As subjects of political concern, he names home affairs, agriculture, justice, Wales , the arts, mental health and the medical profession. He mentions the states of Central and Eastern Europe as states of particular interest.

According to the Register of Lords' Interests, Carlile is inter alia a director of 5 Bell Yard Ltd and the Wynnstay Group of agricultural feed manufacturers, agricultural goods merchants and fuel oil distributors ; a Deputy High Court Judge ; Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Competition Appeals Tribunal , as well as member of the Trusteeship Council ( Trustee ) of the White Ensign Association . In 2006 he became president of the Howard League for Penal Reform .

From 2005 to 2011 he was an independent reviewer on UK anti-terrorism law and from 2007 to 2010 Liberal Democrats spokesman on mental health and disability.

On meeting days, Carlile is rather irregularly present.

Carlile is an independent observer of the national security measures in Northern Ireland . He is the Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Northern Ireland Committee on Protection and owner of Carlile Consulting . He is a member of Gray's Inn's Management Committee . At Lloyd's of London and the Lloyd's Enforcement Board . He is also Member of the Board ( Council ) of the Royal Medical Foundation of Epsom College and chairman ( chairman ) of the Aston Center for European Law and Policy of Aston University . He is a fellow at the Industry and Parliament Trust , as well as at King's College London .

In 2012 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire . The University of Glamorgan honored him with an honorary doctorate in law.

Family and personal life

He names politics, theater, food and football as his private interests and is a member of the Athenaeum Club . He is a fan of the Burnley FC football club . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and President of the UK's largest professional security organization, The Security Institute .

Carlile has three children with his first wife Frances, whom he married in 1968, and six grandchildren. He moved to London from Wales in July 2007 . In December 2007 he married his second wife, Alison Levitt, who is the Principal Legal Advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales . Both are associate judges ( benchers ) of the Inns of Court .
