Alexandra "Alex" Coomber , née Alexandra Hamilton (born December 28, 1973 in Antwerp , Belgium ) is a British skeleton pilot .
Alex Coomber made his World Cup debut at the end of 1997 and finished fifth in her first race in La Plagne . In 1999 she won her first World Cup race in Calgary . In that 1999/2000 season she won three of the four races. Coomber achieved a total of seven World Cup victories. The 1997/98 season she finished fifth in the overall World Cup, the following season sixth. In 1999/2000 she won this classification for the first time, two more victories followed here in the next two seasons. So she is the record winner here to this day. She is also the only British female athlete who has ever won a Winter World Cup series.
Between 1998 and 2002 Coomber won all four races for the British championship. She first took part in the world championships in Igls in 2000 and came in fourth. The following year she won silver in Calgary behind Maya Pedersen-Bieri . She ended her career after the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , where skeleton was the first ever women's Olympic Games . Here she won the bronze medal, which was all the more outstanding since she broke her wrist while training on the Olympic track. She was also the only one of the top favorites to win a medal. The reason for their withdrawal was the lack of support from the association and the lack of sponsorship money despite their world-class performance.
Coomber was a sports soldier and continued her career with the Royal Air Force after her sports career . She is married to an Air Force officer and lives with him in Dean . Commber studied at Oxford University .
