Alexander Christoph von Brevern (Александр Христофорович Бреверн; born October 4, 1823 in Kiekel , Estonia ; † October 21, 1896 in Mitau , Latvia ) was a major general in the Imperial Russian Army and is considered the "hero of the Crimean War". He came from the German-Baltic noble family of the "von Brevern" .

Life

Alexander Christoph v. B. was the son of Christoph Engelbrecht von Brevern (1782–1863) and his wife Julie Charlotte, born von Strandmann (1790–1830). His father was the first family member to receive Kurland citizenship , and he was the founding father of the Courland line of those of Brevern. After his military career, the single Alexander Christoph von Brevern returned to Miltau in 1881 and spent his retirement with his brother Iwan von Brevern until his death on October 21, 1896 .

Military career

His military training began in the Russian cadet school , the so-called " Pagencorps " (Пажеский корпус), in Saint Petersburg . In 1842 he left the page corps as an ensign and took over his service in the Semyonovskoye bodyguard regiment . 1846, after which he gave the rank of captain had acquired, he joined the hunters - Regiment in Vilnius ( Lithuania ).

During the Hungarian campaign from 1848–1849 he was adjutant to General Alexander Nikolajewitsch von Lüders , who commanded the 5th Infantry Corps. Under the orders of Lüders, the Russian imperial army advanced as far as Romania and conquered Sibiu . Adjutant Brevern was appointed courier to deliver the victorious news to Tsar Nicholas I (1796–1855). On July 28, 1849 he was promoted to wing adjutant , at the same time he was awarded the Russian Order of Saint Anne (2nd class with swords) and the Order of Saint Vladimir (4th class) in 1849 .

After being promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1854, he took command of the 3rd Battalion of the Kura Regiment (Куринский 79-й пехотный полк), which was deployed in the Caucasus . In October 1854 he was awarded the Russian Order of St. George (4th grade). During the Crimean War of 1853–1856, Brevern, meanwhile promoted to colonel, distinguished himself through special commitment and was awarded the "Golden Sword for Bravery", at the same time he was given the attribute "Hero of the Crimean War". A mental illness forced von Brevern, who was promoted to major general on August 30, 1881, to quit military service at the same time.
