Sándor Csajághy

Sándor Csajághy , also Alexander Csajághy (born April 6, 1810 in Batsch , Austrian Empire , † February 7, 1860 in Timisoara ) was a Roman Catholic bishop of the Csanád diocese .

Life

Years of study and priesthood

Alexander Csajághy attended the Untergymnasium in Batsch from 1820 to 1823 and the Gymnasium in Kalocsa from 1823 to 1828 . He then studied philosophy in Erlau from 1828 to 1830 and theology in Kalocsa from 1830 to 1833 .

On September 21, 1833, Alexander Csajághy was ordained a priest at the Central Seminary in Pest . 1833-1834 he completed a supplementary course at the Vienna Augustineum . In the following years he worked as prefect of studies at the Pest Central Seminary and as a lecturer at the local theology faculty. In 1844 Alexander Csajághy was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD . 1844-1846 he worked as a theology professor in Kalocsa and from 1850 to 1851 as Canon of the Kalosca diocese .

Episcopate

Alexander Csajághy was appointed bishop of the Csanád diocese by Emperor Franz Joseph I on April 11, 1851 and was enthroned in the Timisoara Cathedral in autumn of the same year . György Girk , auxiliary bishop in Kalocsa, donated his episcopal consecration on October 26, 1851. The consecration assistant was the diocesan priest János Nehiba , later auxiliary bishop in Kalocsa.

During his tenure he founded the Maria-Hilf-Frauenverein in Timisoara, introduced May services in Timisoara Cathedral around 1856 and was made an honorary citizen of Timisoara in 1858 . In the same year, Alexander Csajághy appointed some sisters of the Munich Notre Dame Order of the Poor School Sisters to the Csanád diocese. He redesigned the administration of the diocese by dividing it into six archdeanates, which in turn were divided into 23 deanery districts. Alexander Csajághy donated the St. Mary's altar and the altar to the Temeswar cathedral church, which is dedicated to the patron saint of the diocese, St. Gerhard , the first diocesan bishop.

Bishop Csajághy died in 1860 and was buried in the cathedral crypt in Timisoara on February 11th.
