Alexander Kuhn

Alexander "Sandi" Kuhn (born February 5, 1981 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a German modern jazz musician (saxophone and composition).

Life

Kuhn began his musical career at an early age on the piano before he discovered the saxophone at the age of twelve. He first studied English and political science at the University of Tübingen . In 2004 he studied saxophone at Berklee College of Music in Boston with Joe Lovano , Bill Pierce and Frank Tiberi . In 2010 he completed his jazz and popular music studies at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Bernd Konrad with top marks. From 2011 to 2012 he completed his master’s degree at Queens College in New York with Antonio Hart , John Ellis and Michael Mossman as a scholarship holder of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) .

In 2009 he founded the band KuhnStoff in order to realize his own musical ideas. His debut CD Being Different (Personality Records) was released in 2011 and received great positive feedback from the specialist press. Jazzthing magazine describes the record as a “very promising debut” and the Jazz Podium certifies an album “that captivates the listener from the first to the last minute”. In 2013, The Ambiguity of Light (Jazz'n'Arts Records) was his second album, for which he formed a new international band with musicians from Korea, the Netherlands and Germany - the Sandi Kuhn Group . The Jazz Podium heard "delicate, coherent sounds with an almost magical pull". Kuhn also belongs to Barbara Bürkle's band , to the Boston Collective and with Adrian Mears to the Generations Unit . He can also be heard on albums by Gee Hye Lee , Paul Eidner and Axel Kühns Kühntett .

Kuhn has been teaching at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart since 2012.

Prizes and awards

With the band Kühntett , Kuhn won the European Burghauser Junior Jazz Prize , which was awarded for the first time in 2009, and was in the finals of the international Hoilaart Jazz Competition in Belgium. In 2013 he was awarded the Jazz Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
