Alexander Krakauer, son of the Jewish fan manufacturer Moriz Krakauer, studied violin with Wilhelm Kleinecke in Vienna and also attended the Technical University in Vienna from 1885 to 1887 . Thanks to the support of his father, however, he was able to devote himself to music alone; due to his severe lung disease, any other profession was probably impossible for him.

He composed Viennese songs, for which he mostly wrote the lyrics himself. His songs enjoyed great popularity and were u. a. sung by Alexander Girardi , Edmund Guschelbauer and Julius Wittels (1860–1899); the sheet music printed by the music publishers Doblinger and Blaha experienced high editions. His Singspiel Der Herr Franz was successfully premiered in 1890 at the Carl Theater . In 1891 Krakauer published the musical parodic interlude A modern marriage .

After a spa stay in Egypt (1892) and in Abbazia , he also wanted to visit Bad Gleichenberg when he suddenly died of a hemorrhage on the way to Graz .

Alexander Krakauer was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery, Gate 1 (Group 20, Row 22, No. 14) on June 21. During the Second World War, the tombstone was almost completely destroyed by an aerial bomb struck nearby.
